Iraq Claims Airstrike Killed 23

Allies Deny Raids Which Iraq Says Killed 23
 http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20010620/ts/iraq_raid_dc_3.html

The raids, which targeted a football field, martyred 23 citizens and wounded 11 others who were playing football,'' it said.

The United States and Britain swiftly denied what would be the bloodiest reported attack for two and a half years.

Is this a story devised to give Iraq an excuse for a planned retaliation? How can you lie about 23 dead?

"martyred" eh?

When you throw that word in there, sounds like Iraq did it so they could have reason to attack allied forces in the desert..

I mean, a martyr is someone who dies for a "just" cause, right?

That's a pretty wierd story.

I don't believe they lied about 23 dead.  I do believe there may be some confusion as to who was responsible for the deaths.

I do know that "targetted a football field" is perhaps the mistatement of the decade.

I'm sure there were 23 dead but who's to say who really killed them.

They could all be Saddam's relatives.

I don't believe anything that comes from Iraq.

I think the Chinese Embassy in Serbia was not "targeted" either?

They story goes like this.

Coalition planes were patrolling the northern no fly zone. Iraqi air defenses opened up on them with approximately 10 Surface to Air Missles.

23 people at a nearby soccer field are killed.

Iraqi sources claim that the Coalition forces dropped a bomb on them.

Coalition sources say that a primary booster stage of one of the SAM missles fell back to earth and landed on the soccer field.

You decide which story you believe.
