HTC - your opinion: Open Source Business Model
« on: October 19, 2005, 10:15:30 AM »
Hello HTC,
I'd like to ask you what do you think about this way of multiplayer game development.
  • The game itself deveoped by the company and community when the source code is released under GPL.
  • The company makes money by giving hosting service for the gamers.

Yes, I do relate it to AH and I understand that you will not like the idea.

The development model I've written above is very similar to the model of AH has with difference of opened source of the game client.

What does company gain
1. Development speed - most of OS projects are developed very fast.
2. Many bugs are corrected by many idividuals
3. Less resources for development - many external patches/features
4. Some one will probably able to port the game to Win64, MacOSX & Linux platforms.

Problems
1. Some of ideas may be used by other companies (but not the code!!!)
2. A chance that other company will take the code and make their own hosting service (this probably may be prevented by additions to license GPL and maybe closing parts of the code)

What do you think about this model? Your opinion.

I do not tell - open the source of AH. (You will not do it ;) ) But ask what are porblems in such model can you see?

Thanks.

cheating would be #1 i would think.

people would be paranoid about someone being able to "manipulate" the game coad.

I could tell you what HT thinks about this, but you did not ask me :lol

However, I think he already tried to answer to you but the language filter and Scuzzy deleted his reply :rofl :rofl

You need to do a search for this subject. Go back as far as late 1999. You'll get your answer.

The are not open source at all!!!
There are difference between opened C/C++ code and the 3d model/texture/flight parameters. TW code is closed!!!

I don't really think so - there defenatly may br some restrictions/versions/builds tests that only official version will be able to connect to official/not testing servers.

However interesting point ;)

I think you can see an example of this within the CFS community. While the CFS series is not "Open Source", the game is highly modifiable by the player base. There are very few places online where you can fly CFS(1,2,or3) where you can be assured that cheating is not going on.

A factor that brought me to AH.

I was under the impression "Target:Where" was open in that the customer/community members created flight, damage, ballistic, 3d and skin models.

That customers/community members pay  (er, would if they ever got thier business model off the ground perhaps) what is essentially a license fee to host and play the Target softwares.
