crude zoom test
« on: November 22, 2005, 06:37:06 PM »
I've been trying the P47N lately and was under the impression that the zoom climb seemed better than in the D models. So I ran a little test:
From sea level going 300 mph, full throttle+wep and 3.5G pull into the vertical and locking the position with the angle-trim, checking G meter showing almost 0. The manuver is filmed and alt (initial and final) is read from the film viewer.
This was repeated several times and then again for 350 mph.
Fuel load is 50% for the N and 75% for D40 which is almost identical in gallons.

300 mph:
-------------
P47N - 3.7 kft
P47D40 - 3.6 kft

350 mph:
--------------
P47N - 4.7 kft
P47D - 4.6 kft

The alt in the viewer is given in 100 feet units and some errors are possible due to the execution of the manuver (was not more than 100 feet) so I rate the unscientific error as 150 ft.

Conclusion:
Zoom climb is identical and the difference is an illusion. Likely explanation is that the N will normally be faster than the D.
I still do not understand the climbrate on the N though (same fuel load). It gained a couple of hundred lbs of empty weight which is about 5% but power output has increased by ~20% 2300 to 2800 HP. I don't believe the new wing was that ineficient to explain it.

I remember doing similar zoom test in version 1.4 (iirc) and the Jug had the worst zoom of the planes tested. Just for a comparison I tried the La7 "lunar express" and new kid on the block Spit16.

300 mph:
-------------
La7 - 4.2 kft
Spit16 - 3.8 kft

350 mph:
---------------
La7 - 5.3 kft
Spit16 - 4.8

Spit16 is about the same as the jug, perhaps slightly better. La7 is vertical king still with about 600 ft (~200 yards) advantage. The funny thing is that I expected the La7 advantage to be lower, when initial speed was higher - apparently not so.

How long would you hold the zoom?  Till it stalled out?  Or a set speed?

as high as the plane will go before loosing control and falling back.

Hi,

As far as i know the P47D had 2600HP WEP!!

Climbrate with 6400kg and  this power was 3170ft/min sea level, then smooth decreasing to 2700ft/min @ 10.000ft, 1870ft/min @ 20.000ft,  1280ft/min @ 25.400ft, 800ft/min @ 30.000ft.

Vmax was 354mph sea level, 380mph @ 10.000ft, 419mph @ 20.000ft, 441mph @ 27.700ft, 425mph @ 30.000ft.

So the different to the P47N wasnt that big regarding the power(5-10% more).
