The "KIng" Of Sims.........Caution, Images Inside......
« on: September 27, 2001, 08:50:00 PM »
Wonder what many Aces High/Warbirds/WWIIOL players are doing when they aren't flying the "Virtual Skies"??  They're racing 1967 Formula One Grand Prix cars at G.R.O.W.L.(Grand Prix Legends Warbirds Online Racing League)sanctioned events, that's what!!!

"Grand Prix Legends", Papyrus' outstanding F-1 racing simulation is better than ever with support for D3D, Force Feedback, and dozens of user-created GFX, cars, tracks, sounds, etc., available for what is, IMO, one of THE best games/simulations ever created for the PC.  GROWL has room for a few good drivers.  For more Info on GROWL go here:

Some in-game shots for your enjoyment:

Yep. While Cabby and I don't always see eye to eye on political matters, one thing we're in perfect agreement on is how much fun the GROWL GPL league is. Currently, we have about 4 AH regulars and 12 Warbirds regulars in the league. Every Saturday night, a good time is had by all. Give it a try, I think you'll like it.

I enjoy it, but it's tough. Monza and Watkin's Glen are the only tracks I can really 'do' although I still use the default set-ups. I haven't a clue how to set-up my car for each track, mainly because I don't really know what those tech. terms mean in the set-up section.  :)

Dowding,
There's some really good websites out there with GPL setups for every car and track.

I have no clue on the tech terms...I just download some setups and find the one I like, and maybe tweak the ramps and clutches...that's it!

I think the best thing about our league is that it's made up entirely of Aces High players and Warbirds players, and even some WW2OL folks as well. Kind of a melting pot of MMP flight sim enthusiasts.

Btw, those gorgeous shots above we're taken after installing the D3D patch from Papyrus, and installing the myriad of user-generated updates. The actual game is three years old, and the original graphics are, um...modest. But the racing community has kept this game alive and vibrant with continual updates like you see above. IMO, Papyrus made the right decision and put their emphasis on the physics of the driving, knowing that the community could and would do a better job with the graphics.

As I've said before, it takes about a full day to get it all setup with patches, but it is well worth it when it's all done.

We're not advocating leaving AH or any other flight sim. This is just a fun league to be in and enjoy, one that compliments the great flight sims we enjoy today.

Hey, while I've got racing fans here - does anyone know where you can find Mobil 1 Rally Championship anymore?  The game isn't that old, but it is impossible to find - out of print  :(

Any help would be appreciated!

For a comprehensive list of GPL Add-Ons go here: http://gplpp.com/

For an "all-in-one" easy to install car-art update go here: http://jfcarsets.cjb.net/

For the software to race online(raceserver list called VROC)go here: http://gpl.gamestats.com/

For more general Info on GPL, NASCAR 4, and GROWL League racing go here: http://www.vpaddock.com/index.php

You need a copy of Sierra/Papyrus' GPL, the GPL version 1.2 patch, the GPL D3D patch, a good quality wheel/pedals(preferably ForceFeedback)and plenty of time and patience to learn this most challenging simulation. The "learning curve" is steep but if you stick with it, the rewards are worth it.

Just coming to the Starting Line for an online GPL race is a heart-pounding experience. The races themselves are an exercise in maximum concentration and will. An experience unlike any other in online gaming.....

Cabby,

That looks very cool.  I don't know jack about these type of sims, but is there one for cars like the McLaren-types?  Maybe I'm thinking Grand Prix type stuff?

Oops, cabby.  I meant Le Mans.  Anything on those type of cars.  I used to love those cars when I was a kid with an HO track  :)

Leonid:

Other than having Papyrus release an update to GPL and calling it "GPL2-The 1970's"(it'll never happen as there is no money in "Hardcore Historical Racing Sims", sound familiar?)there is the highly anticipated "World Sports Cars".  Whether WSC ever makes it to anyone's hard drive is unclear at this time, but go here for more info:
 http://www.simracingmag.com./wsc/articles/wsc_screenshots.shtml

GPL has very large, worldwide, almost cult-like following because it's the finest  racing simulation-game ever developed for the PC.  Nothing else compares.  All GPL really needs is updated graphics and some advanced tire-modeling(which is already coded in Papyrus' NASCAR 4, which uses GPL's physics engine)and it would be even better than it already is.

Unfortunately, GPL was somewhat of a failure in the marketplace precisely because it is a "hardcore" simulation.  As we now know, hi-fidelity, "realistic" sims don't stack-up to arcade-type, EZ-Play games designed to look flashy and rake-in money from casual "gamers".

WSC is an ambitious project that we hardcore racing sim fans hope to see released soon.  But considering the uncertain economy, especially in the computer-gaming industry, who knows if we will ever see it?

Until then, at least we have GPL and all the user-created add-ons.....

Thanks, cabby, that site looks great!  I hope they make it. I'd pay for it, though I'd be hitting the wall for a while  ;)  Besides, there's two things my son loves a lot: planes and cars  :)

Sitting on the grid right before the green flag drops is similar to sitting on the CV in a fully-laden F4U, not knowing whether you'll auger into the sea after you leave the flight deck. Surviving the logjam into turn one at our GROWL races is always a question mark.  ;)

The butterflies in your stomach as you sit on the grid brings out some pretty hilarious chat on the text buffer...anything from "Mama!" to "Good luck everyone, remember that the race is won at the first turn!"

Hey Cabby, can you post that pic of our unfortunate start at Road Atlanta? Hehe, you know the one I'm referring to.

OUCHIE, banana!

Don't let him razz ya like that Cabby, even if Road Atlanta was all your fault  :)

At the start I just usually whisper to myself, "Self, may your clutch be speedy and your throttle be sure"  Oh and  "Don't let that banana hit you in the arse."  (Pun unintended)  :)

It usually works..hehe.
