On Dec. 22, 1944, during the World War II Battle of the Bulge, U.S. Brigadier General Anthony C. McAuliffe reportedly replied "Nuts!" when the Germans demanded that the Americans surrender.

Take this for what its worth. My stepfather fought in Germany.  He was the support group for relieving that town.  Rumor was that the McAuliffe actually said "F-U" but due to censorship and selling newspapers, the term was changed to "Nuts".  Don't know if its true.
