I've received my orders,  I can tell you when we take-off, our route, and our target, but I can't tell you when we land....that is top secret :)

That was Fun :)

I especially liked it when we had a few of our downed pilots switch sides so we had someone to shoot at lol

Well, there was BigMax, who wreaked repeated havoc on us, now There's a guy with spunk lol  nice shooting!

Ya, there will hopefully be several AARs from different perspectives.

From one of the front Bombers, I can say that the constant hits kept us looking over our shoulders much of the time.

The screenshot of 21 formations lifting will take some time to get get the best views from, but man that was something else to see.

6 or 7 of us bombers made it back, I think half with just one plane limping home.  Was really a great deal of damage done.  I'd love to do this again, and have about 40 or 50 put up against the raid.  I doubt we'd get feet dry on the other side.

This was great fun.

I was a member of the 4th FG, flying a P-51B.  We took off and climbed south to rendezvous with the bombers.  Here's a view off my right wing as we did so.  (Not the greatest resolution, but that's the best one I've got of the formation from my view.)

Then we moved out in front of them to provide forward escort.  HR and I were assigned forward right of the bomber stream.

About 10-20 miles after the coast of France, as the bomber stream headed SW, I saw a high bogie south of the bomber stream.  I was at 28k, and the bogie was a little higher.  I reported it, and HR and I went to investigate.  The bogie stayed out of ID range as we followed it around the front of the bomber stream, and then it turned in for attack.  It was an enemy fighter.  I closed and either got only a hit or two on him or missed completely.  My gunnery was very poor.  I was surpised how wobbly my P-51B felt at this altitude.  I hadn't yet fought with a P-51B at this altitude before and wasn't used to it.  When the enemy fighter (don't remember if it was a 190 or a 109) dove, I didn't follow, as he was in no position after that to attack the bombers.

A little while after this, two 109's showed up.  I got on one probably after he had already done a pass or two.  He went into a tight, climbing turn as he tried for the bombers again -- I followed and closed.  When I got to 200 yards, I started firing.  Several hits landed around the cockpit area, and as I pulled a little more g's to keep my firing solution, I stalled and snap rolled my P-51.  I thought I had blown it again, as I got only a very short burst into the 109, but the 109 exploded about a second later.  I'm not sure if I got a critical hit on it or if someone else got hits on it, but it gave me kill #1.

I got my plane back under control, and there was still the other 109 in the immediate vicinity.  HR had flushed him away from the bombers, and he was working to get back on them.  I got on him and started to close.  He pulled up into a steep climb, trying to see if I'd stall out first.  I didn't yet and continued to close, and he continued to steepen his climb.  At about 400 yards, I openned up and kept pouring on the hits as he pulled into an Immelmann.  As he got to the top of his Immelmann, I was 200 yards away, vertical, and almost out of speed.  Finally, his wing blew off (kill #2), and immediately thereafter, I stalled out, nose vertical.

My P-51 entered a nastly flat spin at that point (at about 22k), and I was trying various options to get out of it.  Full opposite rudder, stick full forward wasn't doing it.  I tried some aileron.  I tried chopping my throttle.  I tried a notch of flaps.  Around and around I went.  I retracted my flaps.  I tried different control inputs.  Finally, around 15k, the oscillations in the flat spin and some control input started to allow me to get my nose down, a few more revolutions and I finally got my nose low enough to get out of it.  Whew!

I climbed back toward the bombers.  At this point, I sort of lost track of the various fights I was in.  Luftwaffe planes would come in usually at very high altitude, dive on the bombers, and I would try to close on them to kill them or drive them off or drive them low.  The LW fighters had the annoying habit of rolling and jinking as I closed on them but not veering off the bombers.  Thus, if I didn't get a good hit on them, the danger was that I'd go past and be in perfect position for them to hit me.  So I often would do the best pass I could, get as many hits as I could manage, then as I got to right on top of the enemy, try to veer hard off and up, frantically looking back to see if they were following me.  The 190's were the worst because of that flickering roll they can do, flicking this way and that.

On one such attack, I closed in on target firing from 400 yards on in, overtaking him with a lot of speed.  As I got to almost zero range, I pulled up hard.  He flashed under my nose, and I heard something hit my plane.  I thought it might be debris, as I had scored hits on him decently at especially close range, but it was his plane -- a collision.  It tore off my left aileron.  It could have been much worse.

After my pass, I would get back on the LW fighter if it stayed but not follow if he dived out.  I would then try to rejoin the bombers then climb over the top of them to repeat the whole process.

I got two more kills doing this on 109's or 190's.  Twice I intercepted a 110.  The first time, I totally blew my gunnery run, even though I was set up perfectly.  The second time, I didn't.  That 110 dove out and was killed by others, giving me an assist.

By now, I was very low on ammo.  I had about 50 rounds in primaries and about 175 in secondaries.   Near the French coast, more 190's and 109's were attacking the bombers from altitude.  It was hard to roll with them with my one aileron missing.  At this point, I wasn't back up much above the bombers yet.  I closed in, worked to chase off a 190, but a 109 came in on my tail and tried for me.  He closed to within about 500 yards briefly as I rolled and dove out.  He stayed 600 back for a while, then started to recede as I held my dive, running away from the bombers with him chasing.

After he broke off, I turned back to catch up to the bombers, climbing a bit as I went.  Out over the channel, a higher 109 (fortunately not a huge amount higher) engaged me.  I got a couple of hits into him and radioed to a the two friendly fighters (one was GB I think) I could see in the area that I had to run as I was almost out of ammo.  I noticed as I left that the 109 was trailing smoke, which surprised me, as I was down to two 50 cal's at that point.  Maybe one of other two guys had managed to get a quick hit on him.

I rejoined the bombers 10-20 miles east of the English coast.  I checked around -- it looked clear.  I turned back to cover any other bombers coming in after this lead group.  I radioed if there were any more coming.  One of the bombers (Strider, I think) was just into the channel from France.  Some other folks said they could rendezvous with him, so I headed in to land.

This mission was a blast, and many thanks to the folks -- especially Fencer -- who organized it.

nice shots guys thanks for posting them.

storch AAR

upped Bf110G2 from A78 with ample time to climb to 30K.  upon spotting the main bomber stream dove down to 23k and avoided the escorts which were all high.  made a run on a box of B17s that was missing one drone he apparently was not watching his 6 because I was able to close with no fire from anywhere. at d400m pulling the throttle to idle and activating combat trim I let the 30mm bark 10-12 hits buff #1 down.  now the lead bomber is d600 but a fighter is rapidly closing on my six and the bomber driver has wakened and is pinging me as well.  I pull a little lead and fire with all guns.  good sprites observed and a wing comes off.  #2 down.  as a I attempt to manuever to fight the pony I realize have nothing to manuever with.

sortie #1. 2 buff kills on SNO credit for my kill goes to CUTT.

upped Bf110G2 from A41 and climbed to 25K looking for more buffs to kill but all I find is three ponies on 1 friendly.  I dive down and engage 1 pony after a few turns he's dead #3.  immediately switch to the next guy but the friendly has reversed on him and takes him out.  pick up the last pony as he attempts to chandelle left 2 30mm send him down #4.  start grabbing from the deck but as I get to 5k I see a 4 on 2 no icons yet soon I see 2 squaddies engaged with 4 well flown P47s two are following GEAR1 up and firing like mad I target the trailer more 30mms 1 P47 that goes *poof* #5 WEP up the 110 and draw a long lead on the second guy the 30mms bark #6 loses a wing.  start grabbing again but by now being low on fuel I RTB and land my 4 kills.

sortie #2.  2 ponies Joedog and Alky 2 Jugs Bustr and Blukitty landed.

upped from A38 Bf109G6 looking for low stragglers and find a P51 chasing a friendly he is so intent on his target he doesn't even know I'm there.  Line him up and hit combat trim.  hold the trigger down on the 20mm *poof* #7 is dead.  with nothing left in the immediate area I rtb.

sortie #3 1 pony Jester landed.

The fighter cover was great last night, they even tried to help the stragglers.  WTG all involved, including those leather wearing LW types :)

At one point, a 109 flew into the middle of the bomber groups.  All guns went to center, and when they converged it looked like a small Sun going nova lmao

I think we lost 3 or 4 planes to KillShooter in that barrage :rofl

First of all I would like to thank all the Allied guys who took the time to read the briefing and participate in what turned out to be a wonderful experience.

Special thanks to Kev367, CUTT, Shifty, FiLtHZ, YUCCA and SIM who were the commanders of the various escort and bomber formations.

A big thanks to the members of the 367th FG, 325th FG, 78th FG, NightMares, 56th FG, GHOSTS and 4th FG for their participation and excellent work.

Also I truly appreciate and want to thank those who were not part of an organized squadron but joined in either earlier in the week or before takeoff or in the case of one old AW guy (715B) over the channel.

Thanks to those Luftwaffe guys who came up to engage us in the hour or so we were over continental Europe.  I was hoping that the 4 day notice would have gotten us some organized opposition but what we faced was probably even more effective, especially since some of them were our guys who went over to engage us after being downed as allies. :lol

I am particularly glad to see that Storch had a good time, as that is the first time I have seen him happy on the board. :aok

To the Luftwaffe guy who said "good for you" when I announced that 60 B-17s were inbound to the continent with escorts, I hope you are not indicative of the client base of this game.  If that is the case, then Combat Tour is bound to fail.  It was "good for the game", and truly something that was special.

I will post some sort of AAR later after I get some screen shots.

Cheers,

KONG’s AAR

Was hanging out in the jungle pick’n nits, relaxing, minding my own business when those dang natives started beating their confounded drums…wait…wrong story.

Got started late but managed to climb directly over HQ in a 110 about 26k just in time to see the buffs. Their forward guard gone by now I swooped on the lead guy in a 2 plane formation, I suspect he was “in the sight”,got both without return fire.  A 38 dropped as I reversed to try for a HO pass on the other buffs, never got a good firing angle, began evasives as the 38 was now 400 off.  He took off some parts and chased me down but broke off pursuit to remain with the formation.  I decided to land my smoker and try to intercept them on the way out.

Upped another 110, was co-alt and flat out to intercept a box of 3 at 90 degrees.  Landed some hits came around on him got 1 assist 1 kill, he did a good job of switching guns as I spiraled around his last buff, just as I was about to provide some 30mm lovin’, cockpit hit, poof, tower.

Tried one more intercept over the channel, missed the buffs but ran into trailing escorts, a 51 and 47.  A fight ensued, 47 lost alt advantage quickly never saw him again, the 51 tried a frontal attack and lost (never HO a 110) looked around – spits.  Fought the spits most of the way to the deck in a rolling looping fight. Was half dead, missing an aileron and elevator, when I pulled up into a diving spit.  30mms ripped him apart (never HO a 110) and I flew through his wreckage losing a wing.  His pieces contacted the water before I spiraled in, so I was rewarded the kill.

Last couple of Hi-alt bomber runs in the AvA have demonstrated how difficult an intercept was at this stage of the war.  If not in just the right position you can easily miss the formation, and because of the escorts I have yet to achieve multiple passes.

Yup, which is very historical.  Flying Axis myself, I noticed how effective it COULD have been had the Allies sent some of their escorts out in front of, and on both sides of, the mission track.  They might not have shot me down, but they could have prevented me from climbing up to the bombers' alt.

Here's my one complaint from last night.  How in the world did Spitfires get permission to perform an 8th AF escort mission to pseudo-Berlin?  I found that to be very un-authentic.
