helpwith uploading to a website

ok i been making a website  and i got a ftp client program and i can upload  on to the web site  but how do i do it so that people can down load a film i put on it?.
do i have to make a special folder do i have to havea special link?

 i am new to his and having trouble,i couldnt find anything hepful inmy local libery an need it told to me in simple laymans terms

Find out what your site's "root" folder is. Mine is "ftp.site.com/var/www/html/" That means that everything I put in that folder will be in the "main folder." Say I put a file named "blah.gif" in the above folder. It would be linked as http://www.site.com/blah.gif
Then if you put that file inside a folder called "images," then put that folder in the above one, the link would be http://www.site.com/images/blah.gif

An email to the hosting company will be the most simple way to find out what your "root" folder is. If the service came with a "control panel" then it's likily listed in it somewhere.
