Couple of Aussie classics, seing as how you guys have allready mentioned most of my favourites.

Breaker Morant.   True story set in the Boer War.

ANZACs.    Actually a TV mini-series, but well worth a mention anyway.

The Odd Angry Shot.    Classic Aussie Vietnam war movie.

The Light Horsemen.      Story of the men and horses involved in the last great cavalry charge in history, the charge at Bersheeba, Palestine(actually mounted infantry, not cavalry, they didnt carry sabres or lances, but were equipped with SMLEs and bayonets)

Edit> Just noticed Widewing mentioned the Light Horse allready, good to see that people from other countries have seen it and know the story, fantastic to see it mentioned by a non-Aussie as a favourite.

Widewing, they were remarkable men, and magnificant beasts, the telling of their story could be nothing but an inspiring movie.

I didn't mention that I own a 1916 Lithgow No.1 Mk.III SMLE that was issued to Private George Lewis of the 9th Light Horse. He arrived with the 28th Reinforcements and joined the unit in March of 1917 and arrived in theater in September of 1917. I was able to track down some of his records because he scratched his name and unit into the brass buttplate. He returned with his unit, departing for home on July 10, 1919. He arrived too late to participate in the spring battles in Gaza, but was present for the fight at Beersheba on October 31, 1917.

There's a pretty fair chance that this old rifle was used in the famous mounted charge at Beersheba. I have no idea what happened to Lewis after his discharge from service. His pre-war occupation is listed as "horseman". His pre-enlistment address was in Port Agusta and his parents lived in Broken Hill, NSW.

Anyway, this Enfield has the premier place of honor in my collection. It hasn't been fired in 15 years.

I also have a 1917 Lithgow Enfield, which likewise, will never be fired again.

My regards,

Widewing

thats the one
thanks a ton

...The Blue Max is great with particularly good air to air footage, but the actual stunt flying in Von Richthofen and Brown is by far the wildest i've ever seen.  its a little watched low budget roger corman movie (no swamp mosters or chicks with DDDs) whcih used the planes from The Blue Max...

...How about Aces High starring Maclom McDowell in his prime.  Any good?  I got what seemed to be a 3rd generation VHS of it once, but it was unwatchable...

...also very good, the Errol Flynn version of The Dawn Patrol
