2 Questions about Il-2 (the game)
« on: October 26, 2001, 10:55:00 AM »
From Il-2's website:
"When is IL-2 Sturmovik scheduled for release?

IL-2 Sturmovik will be available worldwide November 29, 2001."

Is this true, or has their website not been updated?

Question #2)
I have an AMD Athlon 900Mhz (o/cled to 954mhz), 212Mhz FSB,
512MB PC133 SDRAM(o/cled to 142Mhz)
Voodoo5 5500(PCI)
SB Live!

Will the above system run Il-2 well?

In Russian IL-2 forum ( http://www.sukhoi.ru/cgi-bin/forum/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum&f=5  ) Oleg and some other developers said they optimised the code, and the beta-demo is slower then release. So - I think your machine will be good enogh.

But, unfortunately, they optimised the game for Intel CPUs, and on AMD it can be slower.

What worries me now is when they are going to release a Russian version. Western relases (not "pirated" copies") come to Moscow in a matter of months  :( I want my legal boxed copy with original pilot's manual, flight book and a T-shirt. The recommended price for a box is $21 in Russia, but looks like it will appear even later then "jewel" version...

The most funny thing about IL-2 is that the Russian community is divided into "online pilots", mostly WBers, and "offliners". Onliners find many FM bugs, critisise the AI (artificial idiots), and usually tear "offliners" to a British flag in H2H. I have tons of fun watching their flames  :) Typical arguments: "You don't know how to fly! You, onliners, don't follow the RL regulations! Your tactics is useless!" - "Precise and correct maneuvering in air combat leads to pilot's death (c) Alexander Pokryshkin. Now - look, who's burning?"  ;)

Yes Raub is right.

I couldn't modify the clock ratio (which is the multiplier you see x9.0 or x6.5 or x12.0), and my mobo runs a normal FSB of 200Mhz (my Athlon CPU supports 200, but my mobo supports up to 266Mhz)... So I had to change the core clock speed, and this is the FSB. This gives me higher internal clock speed on my CPU and also overclocks my memory as well and gives me generally a better overall boost than simply overclocking my CPU. (10-20Fps gain in AH)...

However, if you set the speed too high, you will get Windows Protection errors (I set it to 110, the memory didn't like it at- but would boot up sometimes)... After 5 reboots, my system said "F*ck you sweety!" and gave me an overclock fail. So I had to turn it down to 106mhz.

Boroda, so is the release date above in fact a release date I couldn't count on?

Will it be on store shelves (In the US) then, or will they be shipping them to stores across the world then?

Thanks.

Oleg has posted that IL2 is nearly done and asked beta testers to refrain from posting beta 4 screens after 11-1-01 as Maddox and Ubisoft will be posting screens from the gold and that basically we ain't seen nothin' yet.

Not sure on release date but I really think it is on schedule....I hope.

I tested beta 1 and 2 on a PIII 500 with 192MB ram with an sblive, Diamond V770 TNT2 with 32mb and it ran just fine.

It bogged a bit with much action onscreen but it is also a bit below recommended specs.

On the 1.3 Athlon with Geforce2@64mb and 512mb ram all is very well indeed, beta 4.

I have not kept very much track of voodoo problems but I think there are or were some issues.

I am also one of those with DSL problems....cannot connect to online games due to IP conflicts or something we are told will be fixed in Gold.
I connected online from AOL DSL with no problems but unable to with SBCGlobal

SW, don't you have the demo or know someone who does?
The demo, which works great for most people is very obsolete now.

IL2 will not impact AH for lotsa guys in the arena online but I think some hotshot AH fighter jocks are in for a test if they go online in IL2.

I really hope people will not pass IL2 up due to the lack of US fighters, they will miss a great WWII flightsim.

Dammit, Animal said almost the same thing with 5 words, I guess I need to hire an editor.

I have the Demo at work, but unfortunately I haven't taken the time to get it onto a CD (102 megs, just over a 100MB zip disk)- I ran it at work and tried turning down almost all of the settings and I was getting a framerate of literally about .25(screen updated every 2seconds)... This is on a Voodoo Banshee, PII 400, 256MB PC100 SDRAM...

I know, this system sucks- but today was the first time I got around to installing the demo and trying it and I was a little awe-struck that it ran THAT slowly...

Perhaps it needs a reboot or something, I'll try to get the demo home and try it there.

Thanks for the replies.

V5 5500 cards seem to have some problems running IL2, below is a recent quote from the IL2 beta forum.

I tried it last night and got missing textures on the planes and black spots in the sky.

You might also check the forums at SimHQ, I've seen some posts in there about  problems with V5 5500 cards and IL2.

Sunchaser, is it just DSL users having that problem? I'm on cable and haven't been able to connect to any online IL2 games.

Raubvogel, there are connect problems with cable also but Oleg posted on Simhq awhile back that all connection problems will be addressed in the final release.

Some people have found workarounds involving disabling certain cards or whatever but the problem seems to do with more than 1 IP number on an individual computer.

Aces High has no problem sorting through them on this computer so I tend to believe it is just something IL2 missed or did not even realize would be a problem.

Those who can connect are having way too much fun.

Off line the guns are weak. They feel about right. Which means online its going to be WB all over again. Packet loss here, warp there, and you got the rubber bullit blues all over again.
