I think my monitor is going out
« on: July 14, 2006, 09:24:51 AM »
This morning, everything is a lot darker then what it used to be. Last night it was working fine, but now everything has a dull color/look to it. I have an KDS Xtreme Xflat 17" monitor for just about 5 years now. I am probabally guessing its an off brand wal-mart monitor. Right now the contrast and brightness is maxed out at 100.

Is there a setting in windows that controlls the brightness somewhere?

Hmmm... IIRC, KDS is Korean and they really don't last all that long.

As for windows, you could try a gamma adjustment.

i'd say from what you describe it is going. I had a moniter at work like that for almost a year before they replaced it, after i pestered them 100 times... but yes it was the moniter that went wonky. exactly as you describe, dull washed out look, no clarity, dark, so on.

i think it fudged up my eyes a bit working on it for a year

I may just end up getting a new monitor, maybe a 19 or 21" this time.  Would be a lot better for gaming

Before you buy a new one it would be wise to check the vid cable first. I have the 19" version of that monitor and have had issues with the cable.

The cable is attached and unremovable from the monitor but the end that plugs into the vid card tends to get corroded, most likely a combination of me living near the ocean and cheap materials.

I use a non conductive spray on contact cleaner about every 4 months on all my external connections now and haven't had a problem with the monitor since. On the MB I use a foam swab dipped in contact cleaner to clean the PCI and AGP contacts.

YMMV

5 years is a good run for an LCD, they just don't last as long as CRTs. Sell it for $25 while it works and get a new one.
