This is a perspective I have not heard expressed before, at least not by Iranians.  I found it quite eye-opening, and it begs a lot of questions about what is really going on in Iran, vs. the limited info we get from the 20-second info-bite media.  What's certain is that none of us really has all the information...

TEHRAN, Iran — In his soccer-playing youth, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was renowned for two valuable skills: speed, and his ability to fake out an opponent with fancy footwork. Of course, he mostly played indoor, or salon soccer, on a smaller-than-normal field.  

Today, the fleet-footed footballer-turned-president of Iran is using the same tools in his war of wills with the United States. There are many within Iran, however, who suspect that “the monkey,” as the bearded president is known among detractors, is playing a game whose rules he does not understand, on a playing field too vast for his skill set.

“He can’t comprehend the situation he’s facing, and he can’t even understand the consequences he’s talked himself into,” said Ebrahim Yazdi, a former foreign minister who now heads the Freedom Movement of Iran, a leading opposition group.

Speaking at his home, where songbirds lighten the mood outside, Yazdi, who served as foreign minister in the first days after Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returned to Iran in 1979, suggested that Ahmadinejad might not be able to serve out his full four-year term, which ends in 2009.

“He is not competent for the job he holds, and more people are saying it out loud,” said Yazdi, who remains under investigation by the government for his outspokenness and, until recently, his frequent trips to the United States.

I sure hope they dont miscalculate with a missle instead of the monkeys verbal assaults.  It is a hopeful sign that bad things might be avoided.

I agree, Yeager.

It's strangely comforting to imagine that not every Iranian is a slavering ideologist, and might not think highly of the direction their country is taking.

Also interesting, later in the article, is a mention of 'missed overtures', one specifically in the form of a rambling personal letter on the subject of religion, politics and philosophy.

If that's what amounts to an 'overture' then clearly the Iranians are as clueless about how to talk to us, as we are about how to talk to them.

How is he any different competent wise than our politicians? We have some real stupid losers in office only because reps / dems rule this country with their $$.

Neither party would put $$ behind the smartest free thinking candidate if they had a loyal lackey willing to be a robot for the party. Repubs / Dems care about 1 thing: winning, even if it's someone they know is dumber than dog poop and couldn't find their junk with both hands.

It's not like we elect the wisest people in the land to lead us, Hillary Clinton & GW Shrub being two prime examples.... a pair of trained chimp hacks backed by "The party".

I think Pres Bush and Pres Ahmnajihad (derka!) should get together in Bahrain (apparently Allah doesn't see into Manama) for a round of golf and settle the whole thing like real men - with a sports bet.
