I've got to say Im a bit perplexed on this one.  WTH did Bush Sr ever do to deserve such an honor?

I guess it beats the USS Slick Willy

Well, he did fly TBM's at Chichi Jima and got shot down.  He was a president last I heard.  :D

What about John C. Stennis?  WTF he ever do?

Over 50 combat missions during WWII. Got shot down, rescued, and returned to fight again. Continued to serve his country for most of his adult life, culminating in the Presidency of the United States.

That's a hell of alot more than Reagan did and NO ONE complained when he got a CVN got named after him.

This is why the Navy wanted a CVN named for Stennis.

He was unanimously selected President Pro Tempore of the Senate during the 100th Congress (1987-1989). During his Senate career he chaired, at various times, the Select Committee on Standards and Conduct, the Armed Services committee, and the Appropriations committee. It was due to his work with the Armed Services committee (1969-1980) that he became known as the "Father of America's Modern Navy."

Well, he was a President and all.  Most people consider that a pretty impressive accomplishment.   Most of the recent carriers have been named after presidents, so Clinton seems like as good a choice as anyone else.

I think it was better when we named our carriers after battles--Yorktown, Lexington, Saratoga, Midway and such.  Somehow cruisers stole that tradition.

Who's being a dork? I personaly liked Regan as a president. He did an outstanding job, however Bush's service record in uniform and as a Government employee is longer than Regans.

My point being....Bush has earned this right to have a new CVN named in his honor as a faithfull servant to this country.

Please try to restrain yourself from getting a boner over an extremely rich, powerful, old man.  I can't believe someone actually said he was a public 'servant'.  Ruling class maybe.

That being said, Bush was a brave pilot.  His plane was hit by AA fire, setting it on fire and wounding one of his gunners.  He continued the bomb run, dropped his bombs, then swung out over the sea to bail out.  One of the gunners was probably dead or too wounded to move, and never got out of the plane.  The other bailed out but plummeted to his death after his chute failed to open.  Bush himself hit the tail of his own plane, but survived.

TMB's I think would have been a lot more scary to fly in combat then a fighter in WWII Pacific, I talked to a old Marine the outher day and he said that if you were in a fighter at least you flew more of a strait flat line over the base you were hitting. The Marine flew TMB's and the Dauntless also he said that when you dove in all the enmy's fire almost went on you and your wingman. He also said that wile he was diving in on a ***, base that the two wingmen beside him went up in flames. So flying the TMB imo took gutts.:aok
