Win2000 Users or Whistler Beta Testers?
« on: November 29, 2000, 09:03:00 PM »
Hi.  I am testing Whistler Beta1.  If you are, or have experience with AH in Win2000, please check in with me via

bossdog@devildogs.com

I was hoping to share experiences.

So far, AH cannot see my USB stick or USB rudder pedals.

AH executes perfectly.

The only thing so far is controls.

I play AH in Win2k SP1.  I use joystick connected to gameport.  Works perfectly, 100% stable.

Gotcha.  Whistler takes us (supposedly) closer to using USB on top of the Win2K code base.  So far, no go.

Will try these Saitekkies through Game Port.

I use AH in Win2000 regularly, with excellent results. My connection to the computer for joystick is via gameport.

Two friends have Win2000 computers but haven't been able to use their USB joysticks. When I spoke to Pyro about this issue, he said the USB joystick problem was mostly fixed on Win98 machines when a later version of DirectX (7.0A?) was installed on the machines. Now that DirectX 8 is available for both Win2000 and Win98, the solution might be at hand, provided that your video card has a DX8 driver available.

To be sure you get the Win2000 version of DX8, go to the microsft site at: http://www.microsoft.com/directx/homeuser/downloads/default.asp

I am watching this message board to see some feedback from people who use DX8 with AH. I'll let someone else be the test pilot on this one.

regards,
PapaFox

PapaFox, at least one user has noted that DX8 did not resolve the USB/Win2k issue:

If you have a VIA mainboard, there are patches you need from Microsoft for USB compatibility in Win 98.

Also, VIA just put out there latest 4-In-1 drivers which you should grab.

Up until Tuesday last, when I loaded the Whistler beta, I had successfully used Saitek's SGE version 2.0 (beta), with DirectX 8.0 and Windows Me (unpatched).  Using this combination with Win2000 code derivitives was unsuccessful and is consistent with results previously posted.

I am moving my beta software to a computer I don't normally game on.  I do know that our software developer brothers and sisters are hard at work...but the offering at this point is not Saitek X36U-friendly...to say the least.

Windows 98SE for me, lads.  DirectX 7.0a and SGE 1.4.  It's the only way I can enjoy being wasted by you monkeys in the main arena.

Thanks for the replies,

AH does not recognize my USB joystick under Win2k.  I've tried it with the following setups:

1. Clean install
2. Clean Install and SP1
3. Clean Install, SP1 and DirectX 8.0

Question:

I really like NT....NT makes very good use of RAM and its just worlds better than 95/98.  I hadnt considered running Win2K on a personal computer but then again, RAM isnt that expensive, so loaded a computer with 512mb of RAM or more could REALLY give you a system to drool for.  Add the 3D card of choice and who knows.

So taunt me, is a 2000 machine the way to go to have a really really sweet gaming machine of Aces High?  If so, Id probably jam it full of RAM...512 or 768

IF you can get all your flight controls working, yes Win2K can be the best OS you've ever run.

The first thing to do is ask around if anybody is running your flight controls in Win2k to find out if there are any issues there.  If that will work OK, you can move forward.  Next, you must look at what video card you have.  From what I have seen and heard, nVidia's Win2k drivers are pretty good, while ATI's for the Radeon for example, suck.  Assuming you are OK here, lets talk about installing Win2k Pro.

First off, lets talk about RAM.  Really, you will not see much improvement over about 256 Megs of RAM unless you are running some heavy stuff in the background while you fly AH.  The law of diminishing returns kicks in at about 256 in Win2k, so while it will use more RAM, you don't likely NEED any more RAM, and won't see a difference.  Unless you are editing video or running photoshop all the time, 256 should be enough.  Spend the extra getting really good quality RAM like Mushkin or Crucial that is CAS 2 PC133.

Now assuming everything is in order, there is something you should do before you install Win2k Pro.  Go into the BIOS on your mainboard and DISABLE ACPI.  Trust me on this one.  If it is enabled, Win2k will try to use ACPI and force all of your PCI cards onto one IRQ.  Yuck.  While this will work OK in most cases, gamers may have problems with things like sound cards that don't work as well as they should on ACPI.  On top of that if you have problems, with ACPI there is NOTHING you can do to change it after you install.  Once Win2k is installed with ACPI support you are screwed, and the only way to turn it off is to re-install the OS with ACPI disabled in BIOS.  Save yourself a lot of potential hassle and disable ACPI before you install.  You will have to plan your IRQ usage without ACPI, but if you need help ask on this board and myself and others will be glad to help.

Impressive on the 256mb item.  I have a dual cpu webserver (Nt Server 4.0 SP6 with 2 Pentium Pro 200s) and that LOVES ram.  Its going to 512 soon.

I ran Win2k with 128MB RAM for a long time and had no problems in Aces High.  Recently upgraded to 256 with the incredibly cheap RAM prices.

For me, I'd rather use Win2k than 98 any day.  I have all kinds of problems getting my Sidewinder 3d Pro to be recognized by Win98, but it just works in Win2k.  I can do everything I want to do on my PC (watch DVDs, play AH, run Linux in VMware) in Win2k and it almost never crashes compared to Win98.  The only drawback is I have to hold out on getting a new USB HOTAS rig until the USB thing gets fixed.

Still doesn't recognize my usb joystick after installing 1.05.

Dual Xeon 400
SuperMicro S2GDU motherboard
256M PC 100 RAM
Win2k ADV Server

Thanks for pointing out that the gameport JS works fine.  I had an SWpro laying around that refused to work with Win98.  It was instantly recognized and is doing well in AH.

I do like the USB stick better though.

Ditto.

Why is it that Starlancer works fine but AH doesn't?

how about a more painful comparison:

Why is it that it works fine with Warbirds?

Of course, try to select an aircraft in Warbirds under Win2k and see what happens  This USB detection bug is the only one I've seen affect AH under Win2k.
