They just showed a sonic "raygun" on the Future Weapons program
on the Discovery channel.  Apparently if focuses an adjustable sound beam
down a narrow channel which can be made loud enough to disperse riots.

The company rep stated that they had shipped 300 units to Iraq so far.
Kind of wonder why we haven't heard more about this...I'm sure CNN
would consider it some sort of warcrime to use it.

this is a COMPLETELY different thing, the one you linked to is a "RAIL gun" which fires a projectile huge distances at a high speed.

this thread is for a "laser" type thing that makes people feel like they are burning.

The U.S. military used (tested) a "sonic deterrence" weapon in Somalia on convoys. It was meant to keep the Somalis at bay without permanently injuring them but had a dial setting that could go from mild discomfort to really dead. I suppose it didn't work out too well, I never heard anything more about it other than the little minute & a half blurb on the news at the time.

 On a side note...

It's funny what you hear when you pay attention & have the news on 24/7. Back when Reagan was in office I remember hearing a news report on CNN that Cuban backed Nicaraguan troops had invaded Mexico by using commercial airliners (Red Dawn?) & their numbers were reported to be in the 200,000 range. The reporters were holding their hands up to their ears & acting like it was really breaking in their ear at that moment. They went dead air in the middle of it & when they came back a minute or two later. They didn't even mention it, no retraction, no whoops the cameras caught us horsing around...nothing; they just carried on with other reports like nothing had happened. I have wondered what that nonsense was about for 20+ years.

Now that the U.S. military is in the non-lethal business instead of breaking their toys and killing their boys. The military will be at the mercy of Congressional Ideological rules of engagemnt that stipulate by "law"  in all scenarios every non-lethal means available will be exhausted first before U.S. troops are able to save their own lives. Rules of engagement are not voted on by We the People. I beleive thats the pervue of the President and whoever controls Congress.

Can you imagine Vietnam and these wonder wheapons. I can hear it now...you will in all situations no matter how dire exaust all avenues of using your NON-LEATHAL assets. Any dead VC or NVA will result in an article investigation and courts martial for the aggrivating personel.

But sir...what if my life or my mens lives are in danger. Son!! are you asking for a court martial? Are you arguing with our commander in cheif and leaders in congress. Are you implying you know better than they whats good for this military and our country????

Purple Heart Kerry would love to be President and have these non-lethal front line assests at his wise disposal....heheheheheee....o ur guys gonna get screwed.....god have mercy on them.
