I would agree, but if they are going to protect them, it shouldn't be a judgement call. As soon as a defensive player has a hold, even one hand on the jersey, of a QB it should be ruled dead.
Did you see that Giants game where the defensive lineman had Vince Young wrapped up? Well, Young is strong and wouldn't fall to the ground. If the defensive player picks him up to get his feet off the ground to get leverage and Young slams to the ground, the linemen gets a roughing the passer call. If he doesn't, Young can still throw the ball, how fair is that? What happened was the lineman, knowing he clearly had both arms around him, didn't want to get a penalty, so he let go thinking(as he should) that the QB was in the grasp. Well, the whistle doesn't get blown and Young runs for a TD.
The defense should have been able to challenge that the QB was in the grasp, with a clear rule defining it.
Young is very strong, and it takes alot of force to bring him down, and you are asking defensive lineman not to what is required to bring him down.
There is too much of a grey area where one ref will see a roughing the passer and another ref, same play, won't.
