Halo Can any of you Israeli members enlighten Americans about ways to improve our public and school security? You've been coping with the recent terrorism longer than we have, and you seem to be doing reasonably well, at least in preventing mass murder.
I read someplace where you have something like a civil defense augmentation, often armed with M-1 Carbines?
America seems to need a more pervasive armed civilian augmentation force that would, for example, have at least one teacher trained and armed on each floor or area of a school. We're comfortable with armed police and security guards protecting us, but maybe we need more, plain and simple.
(added) Apparently I'm thinking about the Israeli Civil Guard. Google for that and check it out on, for example, Wikipedia. Sounds like a good plan to significantly reinforce public security.

Halo, bro, I don't think that the situation the Isreali's find themselves in, and what happened at VT, to be even close enough for relevance.
First of all, the Gunman at VT was a nutjob, not a terrorist. The palestinian's in the West Bank and Gaza are terrorists, fighting for what they perceive as right. They had a helluva lot of problems there, for decades. What the problem that the West Bank settlers have had, is much akin to what we went through during the Westward expansion of the U.S. in the early to mid 1800's, only with modern technology. If you remember your U.S. History, relations with the Indians haven't always been peachy. It was common in those times for households to be heavily armed. I'd also like to add, sometimes better equipped than the U.S. Army of the time. Of course, it's been about a century since the Westward expansion was completed, so since then things have calmed down. The Isreali's, on the other hand, are still in that "Expansion" phase. Plus, they're proximity to several states sympathetic to the palestinian cause put's there citizenry in even more jeopardy than what our settler's had.
Inna nutshell, that's why Isreal has the kind of society they have. And, why more than anything, we're probably gonna see severe restrictions on the 2nd amendment because of VT and other school shootings. Possibly, an end to states' rights, because some states have gun laws that are seen as being too 'lax' to a Democrat-controlled Congress.
