Bombing airfields
« on: February 14, 2000, 09:58:00 AM »
Being a newcomer to this type of sim I have some general questions concerning airfild capture.  I know we bomb the flak and other facilities but why not bomb the runways to deny more aircraft spawning.  When the field is taken it seems like to me that any damage that it has also resets. This may not be the case but that is how it seems to me.  If the ultimate goal is to capture airfields bombing the runways should be a usefull tactic but if the damage does not reset it is not.

Not a problem realy, since you can land/Take off even without a Runway...for the moment, that is (That might change in the future, especially for Heavy Bombers)

1. Bombing runways does very little. It just means pilots don't get a "landed" in their score if they land at that field, they get a "ditched" instead.
2. Runways come back up in a few minutes anyway.
3. Any damage done to a field when it is captured stays; except the Acks which come back up right away.

Milo: Welcome to AcesHigh.  Some damage to a field is persistant, i.e. can still remain in effect after capture.  Fuel, ammo and troop barracks, for example.  That's why you don't necessarily want to bomb the snot out of a field before capture, especially if your planning on using it immediately to launch an assault on the next field in line. You don't even need to bomb the ack to capture it...theoretically.  The Buccaneers actually made a mass drop on a field once using 10 or 11 transports, and managed to capture it intact.  That was a while ago though, and it was a two-ack field.  Ack accuracy changes may have made this unworkable now; haven't tried it lately. Hope that helps.
