Tips for landing on a CV?
« on: March 21, 2008, 01:52:47 AM »
Ok...  I'm a nooblet in the AH world...  I know it.

However...

On land, I have yet to find an aircraft that I can't land.  AH landing is quite a bit more forgiving, IMHO, then landing in IL2 ever was...

But...  Gosh darn it...  I haven't been able to park on a CV to save my life.

I know how to drop the hook and all that....

Just looking for some tips from seasoned vets on carrier landings.

Or a link to a guide, I couldn't find one with search...  But my Search-fu is puny...  Apologies if this has been covered.

Thanks in advance.  :aok

Depends on what you're flying...try to come on a curved approach with a Corsair, what I do it fly right at the CV, a little to the right, when I am about to pass it I drop gear and do a tight 180 degree turn, drop flaps 2 notches, and hook down.

Thanks for that.

Is it me, or does the search function simply not work very well...  I ran several searches and never came up with that.

Couple of things to look out for.

Watch for it making a turn!

Shift + G is your tail hook.  When your coming in aim for the wires and pull up slightly just before you touch down so the tail grabs.  Also make sure you have your throttle off so it doesnt slingshot you off the back!

Having too much speed is the biggest fault of any CV landing.  Scrub excess Energy off with the rudder or just do a whole flat turning circle to slow right down before lining it up.

Practice with a zero first.  Its basically a helicopter anyway.

Good luck sailor!

If you forget about the hook, that will give you much more deck to use.

Try it a few times and you'll see. Leave your hook up and don't bother trying to catch a wire. Just use as much deck as you want and you'll find it much easier.

When you get comfortable with landing then you can use the hook later.

Carrier landing is actually not a landing at all, its a controlled crash.

Because you need to touch the deck with the tailhook FIRST. Carrier landings come in HIGH, and crash into the deck tail first.
Not at all like a normal landing would be.

The search function only finds items in the bulletin board, not on the trainer's site or in the help files.

stay as slow as possible without stalling and use a tailhook otherwise its basically the same as landing on a runway.

I just leave the gear up and skid down the deck, usually breaking a wing as I spin past the tower.  Of course I'm usually in a 190A-8 when I do that :)
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

The deck is moving forward. Aim for the BOW of the ship as you approach, so that you're less likely to under-shoot and plow into the stern because you're too slow.

Don't forget, too slow is bad, but you can always wave off if you're a little fast. Keep your speed up enough that you're not falling out of the sky until you are over the fantail.

I use full rudder and watch out the side window. like I was trying to fly in with a hevy crosswind and just before I get to the deck I let my rudder go and set her down. < this is how a real F4U pilot tould me to do it. He said this is they way because you cant see over that big honkking motor in front of you. LOL

that would be right. i
like to aproach from the towerside in corsairs and make a right turn into the cv easier to see tower and get lined up right the first time. course if im in a hurry i throw it down hot and hope the tailhook holds it on the deck.
