country affiliation only icon OPTION.repeat: Option

I hate icons. I hate everything about them but I dont want to force my views on anyone.


I ask only for an option COMBINED with the 3 other icon options (ICON normal, Plane Type, Icons OFF) that you add:


country only.


no range, no plane type, only a small rook, knight or bishop icon and nothing more with this option.


no one has to use it if they dont want to. but those that want to have the option to using the bare essentials for like aircraft battles.


they will be putting themselves at a disadvantage but its their choice.

everyone walks away happy, no one gets hurt, those that want the full help icons provide have it and those that prefer to squint at their 19 inch monitors to determine range and aircraft type have the option to do just that  


a worthy request?
I like to think it is  

a sort of next level for anyone wishing for a new challenge in an already very challenging sim.

I am a EAW "veteran" and in EAW you can also switch off all the HUD info like the ID tag, range, hight, speed and heading of the opponent.

You can choose what u want:

-only ID tag (name)
-only range
-only flight info (hight, speed and heading)

or you can choose all or nothing offcourse.

A "strange" thing imho is that now the  109 has the advantage that the opponent dont know which type 109 he fly.  I only see "109"

Its a big difference between a 109F or the 109G10.

When i see a "spit" icon,,,i know almost 100% its a spit 9.
All planes have a clear icon, but the 109 not.
Can we have a  109F  etc. icon ??

That F needs all the advantages he can get.
You would not be able to tell at much greater range then you can in the game.  I admit that that confusion primarily benifits the 109, but the machi, spitfire and corsair also have the same issue(soon the fw too)

Another option should be there - friendly aircraft type instead of just callsign.

p.s. to correct pongo a little:
it's 205 and 202 for the italian things, no confusion there

I'm also an EAW convert, and initially, I used the "cheats" too. Then I tiurned them off in single play, got proficient and went online.

Played against a pilot who is about as good as I am. Found it very challenging, and was shot down at a ratio of 1:2. Still those kills were sweet. He had my E, he had my alt, he knew the distance. I had to judge it.

It's an extra challenge for those who wish for more realism. I say add it.

Although I support the icon option idea, I think it is unneccessary. Better focus on getting a separate HA.

Moose, what were the visual differences between 109F-4 and 109G-10 ? From 100-200 yards, let's say, not to mention 1000+ yards ?

Do you think some Spit pilot who could face numerous paint schemes was able identify the 109 subtype ? Hell, he would be happy to identify it as 109 at all !

Same thing about cannon Hog. Those D-Hoggers use the fear of HO, you can bet on it  

OTOH, Macchi 202 suffers from its icon. Even knowledgeable enthusiast could hardly identify 205 from 202, unless staring at it for a few seconds. Here, you see the difference from miles away. Would you HO a 202 ? Probably yes, but you'd probably think twice of HOing a 205.

With icons dumped, you'd have no such problems.
