I didn't - thanks for pointing that out.

Oh.  I assumed everybody did.

But I think my point, and I thinks others, is that it would have been a much more memorable movie if its basis had been a History book instead of a Comic book.

I think it's funny that the most heavily armored troops of the ancient world were relegated to leather swim trunks.

The point does stand.  Whether it is a book/film whatever, it doesnt need dramatisation.

Yea I would have rather seen it as a more historic account vs the comic book style as well. As it was it was a ok movie, but I would buy the DVD or anything.

Are you saying it shouldn't have been made into a movie, even if it had been done from a more serious historical perspective?

I am saying that the movie would have been good enough based completely on historical fact, it doesnt need any dramatisation...

The earlier battles of Marathon and later Salamis would also make good films :)

When my daughter saw it she called me up.. said the same thing Wabbit said.

And she said nobody else among her contemporaries (or her husband) had ever even heard of Sparta let alone Thermopylae. That made her really indignant.

I'm so proud of my kid.

She did indicate that even though it was hokey the big saucer eyes of her pals made it worth it when she told the spineless weenies it was close enough to true to make the point.

LOL!  Sharp kid, indeed.

I totally agree.  I get that it's based on the comic, but the real events make a compelling enough story that it's been repeated over thousands of years, each time ensuring the audience is awed enough to pass it on to the next generation.

I'll never get that about Hollywood.  They find a story that's been around forever, and somehow come to the conclusion that it'll "never work" and has to be heavily changed.

I'd love to see a Hollywood movie based on Germanicus' campaigns across the Rhine (Figure start it with Arminius' betrayal of the Romans at Teutoberg, then flash forward a few years), but I'm certain Hollywood would completely botch it.

I treat it differently since it is a comic book.  It gave it a different artistic and cinematography perspective since it was taken from a book that used pictures to enthrall its audience rather than just words*.  Thus I think the lax on realism/historical accuracy is justified.  If the movie were a from a history book, I would expect the whole approach to the movie to be quite different, both in screenplay and a cinematography view point.

*I'm not arguing that a comic book is better (or vice versa) than a history book when covering a subject or relaying a message to the audience.  I believe that since it was an adaptation from a comic book gives it a different perspective in the world of cinema.  Apples to oranges.

Ahh.  I agree completely.

Rome on HBO was pretty good. It was fiction built around historical events and names, but the production values were very good.

I loved Rome.  Mark Anthony was one of the best characters i have seen on any TV show.  Immortal line: "I am not leaving this bed until i f*** something".   :lol

It was a great story but as far as historical accuracy goes it made "Dances With Wolves" look like Harvard level historical research.

The real Spartans were ruthless land grabbers and slave owners. They forced a serf class "Helots" to work their lands and if any Helot showed any kind of leadership or intelligence the Spartans would murder him in his bed. I think for a Spartan Lad to make it to warrior status he had to murder a Helot first, just pick one out and kill.

While other Greek city states were developing culture, philosophy, the arts...ect The Spartans lived a very austair lifestyle. Even when they became the most powerful city state in Greece they were total incompetents as a ruling class. When I heard that speech in the movie about how they were "the last hope for reason in the world" I broke out laughing. "Reasoning" was never a Spartan strongpoint.

Feel free to correct me if I messed anything up. I haven't researched this period in a long time. I do know the Spartan warrior lifestyle was created after a military failure that almost wiped them out. I guess that which doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.

I thought it was a 4 star movie. One of my all time favorites. When I first saw the movie "Gladiator" in the theater I walked back in right after and paid to watch it a 2nd time. The only other movie Ive done that with was the original Star Wars back in 1977. <S>
