Seeing as politics is verboten, lets talk about the next best thing, cars!
I am going to field training next summer and as kind of an atta boy my whole family is pitching in to help me get a new car. So far I like the idea of getting a new Camaro SS (black, 6 spd, LS3, teh sexxy pretty much), but thats the stratosphere of my price cap. If thats not attainable I was thinking 4 door cobalt ss tc. If not that then maybe a nice use 911. Anyone had any personal experience with the last two? Any ideas other than the mentioned?

ferget the camaro. it's pretty, but just a copy....once again.

go for a mustang gt. good looking, fast, good handling, and somewhat affordable.

Do it.  You'll never drive anything else.

But... do all your homework.

Or if you go in regularly for a manicure, pedicure, or a waxing.

haahaa the car. Thanks for all the replies, but I have to side with diablo here. I am not a ford guy, and I dont want a mustang. I shoulda specified. I dont see how the Camaro is a copy of anything. it follows the same formula as the mustang. So maybe thats how, but it does everything better.
As for the beemer with an LS swap, thats fricking amazing! Ive never seen anyone do that. But im not looking to put a ton of time into something to make it run well.

Guy on corvette forum has a nice '97 red coupe, D1Sc blower, about 600hp at the flywheel, 6 gear, with a lot of nice mods, looks like he may need rear tires -evil grin- .. he's askin 20.5k for it.

Show me a Mustang that handles like a vette and Ill show you some bech from property in Oklahoma lol. I drove an 07 civic si yesterday, not super fast but it was fun. I think it could have used a good bit more torque and better steering but it was fun haha. Im gunna have to look up insurance rates for an old 911. If I got a Vette my mom would kill me, thats her dream car haha.

YOU talking about real world in the roads you drive on every day, or by the numbers?
the numbers are usless eye candy, as in the real world, you'll never touch em.

in real world, average drivers, the previously mentioned 97 vette would have a difficult time getting away from the mustang of the same vintage. add a few simple bolt ons, like springs, and better swaybars, and they'll be pretty close to equal.
now, take proffessional drivers, and it's a different story. i'm not a proffessional driver, but suffice it to say, nothing that got over 20 miles/gallon ever pulled away from mine. in turns or straights...

a guy i used to work with had one of those hondas you mentioned. i hate to admit it, but i like it. he specifically told me to beat it....so i did. in front of the shop, 5500rpm, sidestepped the clutch.....rolled smoke 1st gear, powershifted 2nd, continued, powershifted 3rd, finally caught traction.....thing was impressivly quick for a honda. i told him it felt like a mid to low 14 second ride. he ran a 14.27 or so. i'd almost consider buying one....but i like my v8 rumble.

'stang for half the price with same capabilities'

Show me.

or.. to put it another way..

..in your dreams, pal.

Go ahead.. find a '97 Mustang with 600hp, 6 gear, chrome wheels, gets almost 30mpg, ..for 10k.
ROFL.

Post the link... or direct me to where they are.

As for 'real world numbers' .. I'm guessin you see a lotta Vette tail lights from the C5-C6 crowd.. that is.. if they decide to 'show you' ..
..most wont ..just not required.

I mean ..it's not a Vette.
It's a Mustang.

Not even in the same world.

Tell ya what ..rent a new Vette from Hertz for a day.
Surprise yourself.

well.....ya got me on the chick magnet part.

drove my old boss's 04. cool, but that's it. hard ride. not comfortable really.
drove a friends 96. not very impressive, but more comfortable than the 04. still a hard ride though.
i'd take the 96 over the 04, although the 4 looks better.
still, i like me fords........you like your chevys.
the mustang was never intended to compete with the vette to begin with, so the fact it's even close is an accomplishment.

but for arguments sake, here's some numbers.......the stang is second to the vette....with por drivers. close enough that the better of 2 average drivers would take the win in any of these catagories.

The Vette is not only 616 pounds lighter but also splits its weight 51.9/48.1 percent front to rear. That more even distribution means more traction off the line, stronger braking, and better handling balance.

At the test track, physics would not be denied. Despite being on tires similar to the Corvette's in size and specification, the GT500 achieved only 0.90 g on the skidpad, whereas the Vette pulled 0.95 g.

close enough that if i'm a better driver than you, i'm gonna come out of the turn in front, and vice versa

During our brake tests, the GT500 nose-dived dramatically but stopped only a little worse than the Corvette. In our usual 70-mph stop, it needed 172 feet. In a much more punishing 120-mph stop, the GT500 came to a halt in 485 feet. The Vette edged it at 161 and 462 feet, respectively.

What surprised us, however, was the GT500's loss in the acceleration runs. Its 100-hp advantage should have been enough to leave the Vette in a cloud of rubber dust. The GT500 also has a useful launch-

100 hp is nowhere near enough to overcome the extra 616 pounds...but that's ok......

Under full human control, we shaved 0.1 second from the 60-mph sprint, lowering it to 4.5 seconds. The quarter-mile required only 12.9 seconds at 112 mph, 150 mph came in 30.3 seconds, and an electronic tether limited top speed to 155 mph.
absolutley respectable for a 3900 pound pig.
In any case, the fiberglass wonder from Chevy ripped to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds and through the quarter in 12.8 seconds at 113 mph. It was also 3.5 seconds quicker to 150, which is hardly surprising given the Corvette's sleeker shape and smaller frontal area.

no surprise here......at those speeds, the vette finally has a clear cut victory, regardless of who's driving.
Our best time was 1:33.30, about three seconds slower than the Vette, and it's hard to forget the GT500's extra poundage. One tester commented, "I'm always aware of the high center of gravity compared with the Vette's, and the GT500 really bounds and bobs. But I could spend a day lapping this car and never get bored."

to a race driver 3 seconds is an eternity, but again, to you and me, it's gonna be whoever is the better driver. 3 seconds isn't much distance when ya get to the slower turns.

it seems as if they don;t like the mustang, but they did give it a fair shake.

my point is that for a car that was never intended to compete in the same class as the vette, it's pretty darned close, and significantly cheaper.
on that note, however, i do personally believe that the mustang is seriously overpriced too. it's no longer the affordable performance car it used to be. if i were gonna spend 40k on a vehicle of some sort, i'm buying a cessna.,...........
