Freetrack v2.2 not working with AH2
« on: October 28, 2008, 05:25:24 AM »
Anyone else having trouble getting the new Freetrack v2.2 to work in game?  My skull moves just fine when I load Freetrack but when I load AH2 I get no head movement.  Also getting a d3d9.dll error with Freetrack once I'm in game (I have the latest DirectX installed).

Would like to hear from anyone who's had the same problem but found the fix for it.

What is your setup right now?   That is, webcam model, single point/3 point etc.

Edit:  I used 2.1 about 5 months ago (I haven't used it since then).  I may have to try it for 2.2 if it says better accuracy and the wii remote usage.

I downloaded an installed 2.2 and rehooked up my FreeTrack and it work better than 2.1.  Eliminated the jerkiness I was having.  Now my $25 investment seems to be worth it with this new version.

Hey Fulmar,

I've got an ancient Intel PC Cam.  Didn't have to do anything to it concerning the IR Filter.  LEDs are a 3 point Cap type that I made from a clip on 3 LED visor light.

I used it with the 2.1 version and it worked well reasonably well  though it was a bit "jerky" as you said.  Still don't understand why I can't get it to work w/ the 2.2 version.  Ran into another player the day before yesterday that couldn't get theirs to work in game with the 2.2 version either.  Wish I could remember their name so I could ask them if they found a fix for it yet.

You have TrackIR checked in the view options in AH game correct?

EDIT:
I just had it happen to me.  The 2nd time I have opened up AH since I reinstalled.  I closed AH and reopened it and it started working again.

Figured out why it Freetrack 2.2 wasn't working.  I had AH2 set up to run on Win98 compatibility because of video issues.  So, thinking that might have something to do with it I switched it back to run on WinXP compatibility and it works fine now.

http://www.free-track.net/english/

Everything I learned I got from the site or by pming someone who had built one.

This thread from The Fugitive got me into it:  http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,223422.0.html

Cost:  Webcam (Ebay) - $20
LEDs and resistors - $6-7
Battery: $4 for Lithium, $.85 for an Alkaline
Everything else was scavenged.

Items Used:
1 x Baseball cap
1 x Metal Coat Hanger
1 x Lithium 9v (you can use Alkaline)
1 x On/Off Dip Switch (from a hair dryer)
2 x 100 ohm 1/8 watt resistors
3 x 1.2v IR LEDs
2 x 30" of wire
Tape
Solder & Soldering Iron
Velcro
1 x Microsoft VX-1000 Webcam
1 x Floppy disk (used to replace the removed IR Filter on the Webcam - blocks out visible light) - see website for details on this

A 3 point cap setup.  The frame is made out of the coat hanger.  Used a little Solder to hold it together.

Lithium 9V power supply.  A ON/OFF switch from a hair dryer.  A resistors in-line on the positive cable.

Probably the weakest point of the design, the LEDs are held in place by a double sided tape and packing tape.

Microsoft VX-1000 Webcam mounted upside down on my desk, right about the monitor.

OK, I cannibalized my old 327th steel talons hat and added 3 x 5mm led's (will put pics up). Total time was $10 since I bought some telco butt splicers vs soldering. 3 X $2 for the LED's and 2 X $1 for the 10 olm resistors and battery holder. Total build time was probably about 35-40 min but al lot of that was figuring wiring. I used a hobby scalpel to cut slots in the hat prim for the lower 2 and to punch openings for the one on the crown. Velcro'd the battery under the rim and tied the wires up with electrical tape.

The only unexpected cost I had was being called an even larger dork by my wife.  Well I guess it wasn't THAT unexpected.

Download the newest Directx.  I was having trouble with the d3d9.dll too but was because I had AH2 in Win98 compatibility.  Put it back to WinXP and it worked fine
