San Antonio, Lackland AFB area
« on: November 26, 2008, 06:45:54 PM »
Hey guys, need some help.   My son is at Basic Training at Lackland and we're going down there tomorrow to take him and a member of his flight for Thanksgiving dinner.  Sad part is its been 20 years or more since I was down there and I dont know any good places to go for dinner.  I wanted to find some place like a Ryan's Steakhouse, something with an all you can eat buffet but at this point anything would be good.  I know theres a Fire Mountain Steakhouse but I ate there about two years ago and it seriously sucked.   Closest Ryan's is in New Braunfels but rules say we have to keep then within 30 miles of Lackland while we have them signed out.

I tried a yellowbook search but there are hundreds of restaurants in San Antonio.  I'm pretty familiar with the North to Northwest to Southwest side of town around Bandera and Loop 410 out to 1604 where my brother lives, but I wanted to try and stay near Lackland if possible.

well did a little more looking,  maybe Fire Mountain was ok, and its Coyote Canyon that was bad.  Anybody eat at Fire Mountain Grill and Buffet on Bandra road lately?

How long's he been in basic?  I have a feeling he doesn't give a toejam where you eat, he'll be happy with any meal esp. one in which he can relax and really enjoy the food.

Anyways, I know when I was down there in basic I didn't care about anything but relaxing.  My parents had all sorts of touristy things planned and all I wanted to do was sit in their hotel room and eat and sleep and email and websurf.  I was ecstatic to do that while they went to get me some Subway.  :)

Thanks Rock, I found those, thats part of the problem.  There are so many places, was hoping to find something close to the base that was good, and someplace they had been to and someone can recommend.  I think we are going to settle for a Golden Corral on 410, they're not that bad.  Maybe even let them pick a place

Tarmac, he started Nov 4, 331st Flt 77.  We live near Austin and only about 60 miles from San Antonio.  We have friends there and my brother and his family live over on the westside Bandera and 1604 so we go to San Antonio a lot.  I was stationed at Lackland at WHMC for 5 years (79-84) but since then I've only been back to lackland and that part of San Antonio twice.   Its not that big of a deal, I'm sure we'll find something to do, gonna try to pick him and his buddy up about 800 and he has to be back by 1900

You want to ask Gunslinger. He is a Drill Instructor there.

You can take him out of basic to dinner? Wow things have changed since I was there. I spent Thanksgiving and Christmas there in 83. My buddy was there too and I spent my town day on base with him at the airmans club.

all kinds of stuff on the riverwalk.  you're still well within the 30 mile radius.

Whenever the wife and I are in San Antone, we never miss an opportunity to go to Mi Tierra or Schilo's.
