Something that hit me....
« on: December 26, 2008, 05:54:39 PM »

Jimi Hendrix played the guitar as a "Lefty"

huh

Check out him playing "Voodoo Chile" at Woodstock. Just kinda hit me watching this. I wonder if he could do both?

No one knows what the future may bring.

nope, you learn one way or the other (generally)

could be some people that play both ways, but not him

if you've ever heard of doyle bramhall III (plays in eric claptons current band) he plays lefty but he has the strings upside down (low E on the bottom high E on the top) its pretty wild

for those of you who don't know much about guitars its the fattest string on top (6th string) then they progressivly get smaller and the smallest is the first string,  this guy has it flipped the opposite way

I saw this guy once about 15 years ago.  Darrel Fields and the Strawberry experience.  He was a pretty good Hendrix mimic.  He played a white left-handed Strat upside down.  He was the epitome of that Bread song "Guitar Man."  He played around all the local clubs until people got bored with his gimmick and he would move to another part of the country and start over, put together a pick-up band and have at it.  He lived his life (probably still does) as a semiprofessional musician.  He was truly good but I always considered what he did as a waste of talent.  It seemed to me he could have at least been a successful studio musician.

Johnny Jenkins says CAVPFCDD is right,,,,he was left handed and the reversed the strings or some such crazzyness.
I also heard Jimi tuned 1/2 step down....so "they" say

Johnny hid in a tree one time as to avoid going to atlanta with the brothers. hes dead now.

Mr Hendrix loved Mr Jenkins.

i would explain this but none would belive me anyway  (why should they, this is the "internets" :)

macon is my holy land, die hard allman brothers fan, the lady that ran the H&H restaurant used to feed the brothers for free

back to hendix, he used a righty guitar, but he had the strings set up for a lefty, the guy i'm talking about has a lefty guitar but has the strings upside down

Clarification:

Jimi Hendrix plays Left handed.  He plays a right-handed Strat strung left handed.

Doyle Bramhall III (who is Doyle Bramhall II after rehab IIRC) plays Left handed.  He plays a right-handed guitar, upside down.

wiki:
[q]Doyle usually plays the Fender Stratocaster but will occasionally play some Gibson guitars, either playing on left-handed models or right-handed models upside-down. Doyle plays guitar left-handed but his guitars are strung as if to be played by a right-handed player. In other words, the low E string is at the bottom of his guitar, and the high string at the top. This fact and his unique playing style can be seen clearly in the In the Flesh: Live DVD footage[/q]

1plus44, Doyle is from Dallas and used to hang out alot in Austin.  Keep an eye out for him.

:)

Just thought that was kinda cool. I've always thought about playing lefty on my guitar, get one and try it out. Who knows, maybe I'd do better.

it is cool it's a rare thing see, do what feels comfortable, i write, throw, and do everything else righty so it's most comfortable for me to play righty. But if you're wanting to switch because you think your going to play like hendrix you're sadly mistaken lol. It's tough and it takes alottttt of practice, just stick with it and it will all fall together eventually, playing guitar is just one of those things that sucks in the begining because you see little progress.
