Suggest a new monitor?
« on: January 24, 2009, 01:07:46 AM »
I'm looking for a widescreen monitor for my new system. My ideal was the Viewsonic vx2660, 2 ms with a resolution of 1920x1080, brightness 300 for $209.

Is the 2ms really much better than 5ms? Is it worth going for the 1920x1080 resolution instead of 1680x1050?

Can someone recommend a monitor?

Thanks in advance!

I take it your looking at an open box purchase? At that price why not? Thats a great monitor.

No, it wasn't an open box, amazingly. The problem is they are no longer in stock and I was hoping to have a monitor for the new system. My old one is going to my wife and daughter...

More pixels in the same space will make for a much sharper image and yes, 2ms is better than 5ms (minimum recommended for a gaming monitor).  Also make sure contrast is greater than 1000 (10,000+ dynamic).

1920x1200 is as good as it gets without spending a grand or more but I think the even higher res monitors are more for graphics applications and not gaming. The one you mention is not unlike what I am using. The smaller dot pitch helps too. The monitor I got with my first computer had terrible image shearing even though it had high resolution because of the dot pitch. I think the 28" monitors mostly have that problem but the one you mentioned looks good.

The one I mentioned isn't in stock anywhere, I'm looking for recommendations for something instead of the one I had in mind.

I use an Acer 24inch. I run it at 1920x1200. It seems fine to me. However I'm no expert. When I purchased the monitor it was like $100 cheaper than the other 24 inch monitors and it had great reviews. I've had it about 9 months now and am still quite happy. I think I have one dead pixel but it doesn't seem to be in the way since it is low left.

From what I understand Samsung and viewsonic are some of the better units.

Just purchased a Gateway 24' widescreen from Best Buy.  I have no idea who manufactures for Gateway.

After using it, I wonder why I've waited so long to go widescreen.  I still have the 22" Sony CRT.

Del....the gateway has the ability to run 2ms and/or 5ms response times.  You have your choice. You can go from one to the other within a menu.

It has 3 options for hookup.  VGA, DVI, and HDMI.  It is HD1080p.

Desktop I am running 1920 X1200 and the icons are the same size as 1280X1024, maybe a tad larger.

In game i'm running the max 1600 X12?? and it is gorgeous.  Cost was ~ 420 dollars.  Refresh rate is 60, and I hold a steady 60.

Well worth it.

I've got an LG 22" and it's great.  I've been looking at an Acer 24".

Stick with a major brand; LG, Acer, Samsung, Viewsonic, etc.

The last two I've gotten are LG's. My wife now has my 19 inch, and I have This One. Very happy with it. I found it on sale for $209 when I got it.

The one thing I have always found surprising ( not ) is how people seem to always post something like .go with name brands!

The manufactuers make LCD(s) and or CRT type monitors then distribute them out to Vendors

EXAMPLE: Manufacturer's
Sony/Samsung/Panasonic/Phillips/HPC Technology Int'l Ltd/Shenzhen KTC Computer Technology Co Ltd/etc etc etc

EXAMPLE: Vendors & Distributors
NEC/Dell/Sony/LG/AOC/Hanns-G/Sceptre/ASUS/Hewlett-Packard/Gateway/BenQ/Compaq/Acer/etc etc etc etc

I in the past have experienced the above several times

I had a Hewlett-Packard Monitor and once the housing/cover was removed I was astonished to find out it was infact a Sony IT Professional grade 21" CRT

then I had a NEC 21" and found the same scenario, I was infact the owner of a Sony IT Pro 21" Monitor that was packaged and rebadged as a NEC Monitor ( this is going from my terrible memory, think it was a NEC branded Monitor )

so when people say buy name brand Monitors, what are you really buying?  to me you just buying a more expensive NAME.....and sometimes a better warranty, but not much more..... the internals are most times the same as the name brands except buying the off brand saves you some money......

Food For Thought......

I should add to my above post, that with the move toward almost all LCD/Plasma type monitors & Televisions there has been a flood of new Manufacturers and Brands which are not "Rebadged"  components  as I posted in the above reply.

but to add, there is still alot of Name Brands that are well known which is still a Repackaged/Branded Component ( just for clarification purposes )
