Ok a Bug ... That only Aces High hits..That seems a bit odd to me. Thank you for explaining.

FYI. I have another machine with onboard sound and although its a single socket A board. I RAN ONBOARD SOUND FOR 3 Years..Humm  (Nvidia Soundstorm)

Kam

On board sound is ok as long as you have the CPU power to go along with it. With todays computers Vista is a hog and takes a bunch of memory and CPU. So while you may have a better computer, it has to run a lot more crap than it use to.

Custom sounds while they do add a lot to the game are not always the best idea. Some people pump them up, or use better quality sounds to really make it better. However, when you do that it takes more power to run them. If you have a separate sound card the processing power comes from there, but if you have on-board sound the processing power comes from your CPU.... which you really need to run the game and all that other crap vista believes you need running

The problem with the AMD processors is well documented, and is nothing in the game. Aces High uses "hyper-threading" which is what the dual CPUs is suppose to support, but AMD's code is a bit different and doesn't react the way all the other processor do.

Actually a couple of other programs hit the same bug.  It only happens to programs which require dual high speed timers AND running multi-threaded.  There are very few natively multi-threaded applications which require dual high speed timers when running on a multi-core CPU.

Onboard sound chips require a significant amount of CPU attention.  The larger and more detailed the sound source is, the more CPU cycles are used up.  Pauses, stutters, slight hesitations in the video display could result, particularly when in the presence of many objects.

The problem is when the onboard sound chip does not get enough attention from the CPU, it can cause lots of dropped sounds as well as lockups of the sound system.

Thanks for getting back to us Skuzzy.   Update...service pack three does include a newer version of the dual core hotfix.   When I went to install the KB896256 (which turns out was already installed) I got a notice saying the service pack has a newer version of this, and there is no need to install this fix.

I followed the link for the AMD patch that you gave in the "easier method of fixing this issue" (yes, I do have dual core) and installed the dual core Optimiser 1.1.4.  I hope that was the one needed, most of the rest said linux version and such.

I did not install the amdcpusetup file that was linked in part 1, or the "harder method of fixing this issue".  I currently am using the nforce4_amd_6.70 driver on my system, and truthfully don't know if installing the amdcpusetup file will overwrite that driver, conflict with it, etc.

Am going to try playing now, and see what happens.   Yes, when it freezes, for the most part it looks like a sky at dusk as was mentioned earlier in the post.   Will try changing compatability if it continues.

The weird thing is this however...up until last week when I reformatted my hard drive, the game played smooth as silk, no issues what so ever.   After reformatting, I installed the same amd drivers, the hotfix, video drivers, etc that were running before.   Had service pack 3 installed, etc.   It's as close to what it was before, but suddenly the freeze issue pops up.

Thanks again however for the help so far.  Please don't hesitate to respond if you see a need.

Well I missed it. Hey I was trying to help. There was a bunch there.  However, did you read all the way through about the registry changes?  I had an AMD machine just like yours and got it to working okay. After the patches I also had to play with the registry a little.

I did go through registry also. TY for the sugestions.

Knock on wood, it appears the dual core optimizer was the ticket.   Have not had to go to compatability, and was onf for over 4 hours w/o a hangup, including over an hour in the special event last night, where I figure if there is going to be an issue, it should/would have happened there.

Thanks Skuzzy, and the rest for links, suggestions, etc.

When you put it into compatibility mode you force it to run on only one CPU. There is a bug in the AMD CPU's that the Aces High program hits.

i have almost exactly the same setup, except for the vid csard.....mine is a nvidia 8600gt with 256mb. i don't know what soundcard i have....how do i tell if it's onboard or not? mine works for a few seconds at a time.......drops from 60fps to 1fps. stays at each level for a few seconds at a time.

thanks....

What are your in game setting? Also, check the "net stat" in the game. In the top box, variance, it should be a flat line. If it is bouncing up and down like a heart monitor, your cpu might be getting taken over by another program which would cause the slow down. Even with a good system you shouldn't be running any other programs.

HHMM.......

the new machine has symantac in it. other than that, there's only 33 or so processes running(about the same as i had in the old machine).
i also fofgot to mention, that i haven't gone online yet....this is in the offline mode. i haven't even gotten to the point of logging on. i think that this eliminates the internet connection, and showing through speakeasy dot com, doing a speed test to dallas, m d/l is in the 1500 range, u/l is in the mid 300 range(also about the same as the old machine)

it doesn't do this slow down thing no matter how many windows i have open, or what i'm doing, but when it does it in ah, the entire puter slows down.

i'm really confused, as it makes no sense, to have a machine twice as fast with twice as much ram with a faster hd, faster ram, better vid card, and poopy performance.

the old machine was also an amd processor, just not a dual core.

thanks guys!
