I'm discovering what a gem this bird is. Any tips on how to fight it more effectively?

This is a great 1v1 plane where you can take your time and saddle up. You can saddle up almost any plane for at least a few turns, get really close before you shoot to save your ammo.

For a large scale furbal its not the best plane. Its not great at deflection shots and doesn't have the ammo to spray.

Most Yaks I come across are flown well. Keep the fights fast and in the vertical if you can. Use the yaks speed and climb rate to bleed your opponent of E, then you can pick at him until he falls apart.
The journey is the destination.

Keep in mind that its faster at 5K that on the deck. Use its climb speed to try and rope enemies, you can get into turn fights but keep an escape route to extend if needed. Cutting down the engine a bit will increase its turn rate and you will be able to surprise unwary spit16's. Don't open fire over 400 yards distance.  :salute

To that I'll add, attack from an advantage. Once your behind that spit 16 he'll have a hard time escaping. Where a nose to nose coalt CoE start is much tougher to win.

And know when to get out of the fight, extend for a couple of K to regain E, immelman zoom back up and back into the fight.

Keep her fast.  use speed  acceleration and climb rate to get above most plane.

What makes it a poor deflection shooter?

I kinda like this plane. Seems like a good value at ENY 20. Its an easy transition from spits.

Low ammo count and you really need to be hitting with the one 20mm in the same spot for a bit to knock an enemy out of the fight.

I had a lot of fun in it the other day.  Rubber called me a sissy for fighting in it oddly enough, I've always thought of yak9u's as far from being an easy mode plane.

I'd love the model with 2x 20mm cowl guns and a 37mm hub!

It would lose some point ability. Thats a lot of mass to be tossing around.

It's has a very poor over the nose view. Not much room to reposition the view and the square bracket surrounding the gunsite blocks your view. (compared to the Spit's over the nose view)

It's one of the few planes that turns tighter going right than left due to the direction the prop turns.
