The p40 in this game is very interesting.  The 50 cals seem way more powerful than the 50cals I fly with p51's.

You know, I noticed this same thing...  Not sure why that would be though.

Just purchased the Osprey book for RAF and Commonwealth P-40 aces a few days ago.  Am currently working on a skin used by the RCAF in the Aleutians and will probably turn to a RNZAF as soon as I finish my current project.

its probably the different flying style you use in the plane.
pony more of a BnZ snapshots
P40 more of a sustained tracking shots.

closure rates and convergence are allso issues

I learned GIMP for the sole purpose of making skins.
Again, there isn't anything stopping anyone from doing it.

I would agree with you, except that the P40B only has two 50-cals, even when fired separately from the 30-cals, seem to kill faster than the four 50's on the P51B (even in a sustained fire situation, not BnZ).  I know these guns are actually different 50-cals than the P51's, but I don't know what the difference actually is.

1.  center mounted guns.  The .50s on the P-40B, no convergence to deal with.  Easier(?) to hit your target.
2.  slower plane(?)  The P-40 being slower, to do everything, will give you more time on target when you finally get your gun solution.

#2 sounds kind of far fetched to me now that I've typed it, but who knows?

I dont know how much this matters, but the gun placement for the guns are closer to the fuselage on a P40E than the P51, F6f, F4U, etc.

Having the guns closer makes for a larger "sweet spot", simple mathematics can show that.  How much more effective that makes the P40E's 6/.50 cal guns is dabateable.

Something I hear a lot is "I hit that guy hard and he didnt go down", but what happens is their convergence was set to 600+ and they only were able to land one set of guns on the target.  Most guys forget how perfect or near perfect things have to be for all guns to hit in the same spot and deliver enough damage to rip off plane parts, especially the .30 and .50 cal MG's.  This is especially true the further out the convergence is set.  Granted, enough dmg can still be had but those who put their conv all the way out to 600+ are robbing themselves of accuracy and "dmg on target" fire up close (300>) were most of the kills shots are had.

Only by ~6" more on the P-51.
