New 9800 GTX card - bizarre frame rates
« on: March 09, 2009, 03:44:57 PM »
Can anyone help me connect the dots?

I recently replaced an EVGA 7600 GT 256 with an EVGA 9800 GTX 512. When I boot my computer and fire up AH2 my frame rate is a steady 60. If I leave my computer on standby/idle for an hour or so and fire up AH2 I get frame rates of 30 or less. What could be causing that to happen? It never happened with the 7600 GT card.

Are you letting your system go into "sleep" mode if so this is a known issue also, turn it off or use the monitor turn off rather then the "sleep"

I also have to wonder about the power supply.. I've seen them fail in a way that they are fine at first, but start performing poorly after the computer has been on for awhile.. maybe it overheats or something... <shrug>

Just a shot in the dark here...

Good thought, but not true in this case.  Build a few new systems with the 9800 GTX and same same thing.

generally if psu go they go .. but i did notice on my 9600 GSO it said needed at atleast a 400W with 26A on the 12V rail so as long as you have what recommended shouldnt be a issue

What driver version are you running.

The drivers are the latest from Nvidia - 182.08

My PS is a PC Power & Cooling Silencer  610

I've used computer/monitor "sleep" mode in the past without a problem.

Oh yeah...the Nvidea global settings I'm using are the ones Homeboy posted in this forum several months ago. Aside from setting Vert Synch to "Force On" I'm clueless as to the rest. Would be nice if there was a sticky posted here for recommended Nvidia and ATI control panel settings.

Thanks for the replies.

I had problems with the 180.xx and 181.xx drivers with unrelated issues as to what you're having.  Plus I have an older 8800GTS 640.  Currently I use the 178 drivers.

I'm running the 181.2x drivers IIRC without issue.

Max, regardless if this helps resolve the issue or not go DL and install Riva Tuner and set your GPU fan speed for a constant 65%.  It will keep the card running under 50C at all times.  Do not use the Nvidea performance tools for this, in fact, uninstall them if they are installed... they are garbage.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

TilDeath and I were having similair problems with my 9800GTX.  On the EVGA Precision Graphics Tuning graphs, my core clock would drop from 738 to 301.  At the same time, my in game FPS would drop from a steady 59-60 (monitor limit), to in the low 20's and 30's.
I had my screensaver set to turn on in 10 minutes of unuse, and it seems that after being in AH for 10 mins, it would drop the core clock speed as it tried to use the screen saver funtion.  After turning that off, it cleared it up for the most part.  Now it will be at 301 while on the desktop, IE, etc.  but as soon as I start up AHII, it jumps back up to 738 speed and runs fine.  I'm not really sure if that was the problem or not, but it did seem to fix the in-game stutters that I was having.

I'll give that a try. Yesterday I rolled back the 182.08 drivers to the previous 181.22 release and still experienced the frame rate drop after the computer/monitor came out of standby.
