Agreed. This would make an excellent addition to the current plane set. Not too great a turner, not overwhelming guns, excellent climb, decent speed (slow by AH standards, but not bad).

Was this known to the Allies as the Tojo?  I think it was, I'm at work and don't have my books.

Read some interesting books on encounters of B29's over Tokyo and Tojo's attacking them.

What I've read on it kinda reminds me of a 190 A-4 with a better climb and softer punch.

I've always wanted to do a Ki-44.  It would be a hoot with those super low velocity 40mms.  But we'll probably do a Zero first and for an Army plane, I'd be more partial to a Ki-100 first so that we can recycle it into a Ki-61.

Pyro I would settle for the Ki-61 and Ki-100.

I see what you mean about the recycling - pretty much the same plane from the firewall aft.

I guess I still have that RPS mindset though, looking for a Ki-44 in 1942 to lay the smackdown on the Flying Tigers.

Yes!

Ki-100! Slightly slower than Ki-61, better maneuverability, better vision (in later variants), cannons!

Don't get too excited SnakeEyes.

Both the Ki-61 and the Ki-100 had inferior performance to the Ki-44-II.  And IMHO they are not nearly as good looking.

The 40mm cannon on the Ki-44-IIc was quite a rare installation.  Most of the IIc's had 4 x 20mm.  IIa had 2 x 12.7 mm and 2 x 7.7 mm, IIb (major production variant) had 4 x 12.7 mm.

But there were about twice as many Ki-61/100 built as there were Ki-44, so I guess that's why we'll see it here.

Go with the Ki-44. I have never seen that in a sim. It was the first E fighter the Japanese had, and they didn't produce as many as they could have (thankfully for us) because the japanese were wary of an airplane that sacrificed turn rate for climb rate and speed. In one of my books on it, an american pilot (Believe they were in early P-51s) reports they encountered an unknown Japanese type slightly higher then their flight. Instead of diving and attacking the americans when they pulled up, the Japanese planes went vertical, outclimbed them, then turned back on the 51s when they stalled. When he recovered from the stall and started accelerating, he was the only one left from his flight who wasn't already shot down and immediately fire-walled the throttle and out dove the Ki-44s barely escaping.

HTC, give us the Shoki!
