Ive decided to fix my rubber bullits myself. I tried to get a dsl, but the phone company says my lines wont handle it. They are putting in new lines for this, in my area. And it should be available in 2 months. In the mean time I wondered if cable might not be the way to go. I can get RR, But ive heard some bad things about cable getting overcrowded and what not. Has anybody tried both, to compare.

I've used both Cable and ADSL.  Haven't had many problems with either.  I had ADSL with PacBell and now I'm using Cable with @HOME. (In Fremont, CA)  There are a few annoying quirks with each.

I always had perfect connects with ADSL, never been dumped or had any bad connection problems.  I only had DSL for about 6 months, in that time it went completely down twice.  The first time it was down for about 3 hrs, the second time it was down for about a day.  Other than that I didn't have any problems with it.

I also have very good connects with Cable.  About 2 times a month it seems to go "down" but only for 5-10 mins usually.  I've never been dumped except once when this "outage" happened.  There is also 1 very very annoying thing with cable, every once in a while someone will steal my IP address and I will get an IP conflict. (this has happened twice)  They don't put any ACL's on the modems that restrict what IP you can use, so really anyone can grab anyone else's IP address. (we get static IP's)  This is more of an annoyance than anything else, but it does prevent you from using the service.  Talking to their tech support really doesn't help, it's very difficult for them to do anything about it.  (I have 2 friends who both work for @home and apparently this happens a LOT)

As far as bandwidth is concerned I get quite a bit more downstream on my cable modem than I got with ADSL.  On DSL the fastest I could download was about 180Kb/sec, on Cable I've gotten over 400Kb/sec but that is quite rare.

Of course all this has just been my experience and is not representative of all DSL or Cable internet service. YMMV

Overall I've been very happy with both.  I got DSL because it was the only thing available in my area.  After I moved to Fremont the only thing available was Cable.  I would suggest you get what is available, either of them is 100x better than any analog modem.  Cable also cost 1/2 as much to install and cost me less monthly than my DSL service did.

Hope this helps,

-Funky

Everyone I know that owns cable is happy with it.

Everyone I know that owns DSL simply loves it.

DSL is the way to go if you can afford it and if it is available.  The combination of these two makes it out of reach for most people.

Try for DSL... if its not feasible, go for Cable.  You aren't giving much up.

I have DSL from BellAtlantic at home. 640kb/s downstream and 90kb/s upstream for $50/month (I heard they plan to upgrade upstream for 120kb/s for free, but that's uncomfirmed). Never had a problem connection to AH with it.
It's not without problmes though. Once in a while service goes down, usually it goes back up in several minutes, but once I had to wait for quiet some time. Other then that, BellAtlantic's support is horrible - expect to spend 1-2 hours sitting on the phone trying just to reach them.

EZ wants a pornpipe.
Dunno what DSL packages are but with @Home you get five emails and five webpages(5mgs each just link them all).
@home doesn't charge for the rental of a modem either , I've had mine for 3 years now heh.

@home $40.00 CDN so that's like $2.50 US
Dunno what install charges are now last I heard was $150, I paid jack when i got mine installed was PROMO thingy going on.

Hmmm....ya need to get to know me Deja

Cable has seen its ups and downs in my household.  When I first got it (I was one of the first in my area) it rocked.  Road Runner did mass marketing in the area and soon, my connects were miserable for online gaming.  Since the node I was on was oversubscribed, my packetloss ranged from 10% on a good day to 25% on a bad.  Needless to say I was pretty pissed.

Recently they just added a node to my area and split some subscribers off to this other node.  My packetloss is back down to a reasonable level (2% yesterday when I measured).  Since they segmented the area, I havent been disco'd yet.  Hopefully, I wont have to go thru another one of those growing pains again.

That is my experience with Cable.  Its got its ups and downs

Well my DSL line gets activated tommorow.
Looking forward to it, but I have one question. Does anyone have any experience on the best way to set it up so that all my machines on the lan can use it to get on the net?

I had a 56k USRobotics modem that was doing ok with Internet Connection Shareing, but I had a few minor problems with. Like not being able to host Roger Wilco, & icq chat cutting up.

Any advice aprreciated.

PS 256k both ways Cisco 675 ext modem
package is 30$ a month & another 17 for isp.
Thats with 2 mailboxes & 5mb of webspace.

Rude,

Let me know how it works for you.  I have been looking at DSL for a while now they have the hook up and equipment for free during the promotion, and at $ 39.95 it looks very good.

Thanks

I had ADSL installed into one of my offices with about 100 users using the new Caymen ADSL router.

My office has not dropped connection in 4 months (since it was installed).

6Meg downstream (burstable) maximum
1.54 downstream minimum (fixed)
385K up stream (fixed)

I'd say from a IS Directors position, the ADSL link I have at one of my offices is VERY stable and plenty fast.

I've had very little experience with cable modems, so I really cannot comment on it.

Still loving the T1 I have at home!

Cable works well for me.  Much better than traditional phone modem conections.  I don't know if it is better that DSL, but in my case they waived the instalation fee which made it significantly cheaper than DSL.

Same here Greybeard, I guess when you have elk, deer, and cougars  in ones backyard  you can bet the high speed modem choices are limited to two cans and  a string.

Well, all I can say is that this is just Stupid Fast!

My ping time to the HTC server in Dallas went from 130ms to 80ms. The hops did increase tho from 7 to 18, but dont think at this connect it will represent any probs.

Milo, jus one thing to say....Do It!
