there is no one, end all be all, Martial arts,  except maybe "jute kune do"

which uses "no way, as way"

you learn one Martial art and you become boxed in.

" Be like water..."     being able to adapt to any situation, Styles are constricting.

and "belts" are for holing up pants.

I couldn't agree more Ink,well except the Jeet Kune Do part, even Lee admitted it wasnt perfect. Also whoever said Hapkido was kinda Karate and Judo has no idea what they are talking about,Hapkito is a Korean martial art that if simalar to anything is closest to Aikijitsu or as now known by Aikido.

I've had some experence with martial arts,TKD,Aikijitsu, wrestling and quite abit of boxing. As Ink has said there is no 1 type thats best and all have strengths and weaknesses.Your best weapon is your brain,us it to defuze the situation and walk away,if that fails learn the 4 different fighting lengths,up close as in grappling, arms length as in boxing,a step away as in the many different kicking styles and the last 1 running distance to avoide the whole problem to begin with.

Batty,I looked closely several time at the vid,the man was trained and hit him with a left hand punch. If you look close he uses a southpaw stance and I'd expect him to use his left leg to kick with. His right hand slap was used to control the idiots head to deliver to punch that put him down.

BTW,a punch to the jaw doesnt hit a "certain nerve" what it does is cause the brain to move inside the skull, this causes a "short circuit" of the brain stem which causes you to loose control of your lower extremities and fall down.Your not really "knocked out" your brain simply cant send the signals to control your legs,in a true knock out you would have a concussion and likely some brain damage.

Anyone who's watched some boxing has heard"he's out on his feet"the boxer isnt unconseses, his brain stem is shorting out so to speak and he cant control his legs.

And yes I've experenced this as I've been told I lead with my head....LOL... I tried to beat their hands up with my forehead.

Only once was I truely knocked out and that was in a hockey game, not a fight, but I've hit the canvas more times that I care to mention.

   :salute

PS: wasnt trying to start anything Ink,as you've oviously read Mr.Lee's book,so you know that he freely admitted that it wasnt the best as there's no such thing.I dont like the"be like water" thats much deeper than most realize.....

 YMMV.

If you think about it, he did not want to put a name to it, that is when it became not "perfect".

I have read his book a "few" times. hehe

Oh and I meant to say I do like, not I dont like the" be like water ". My old master was lucky enough to Know Mr Lee and we often talk about him and others over a few brown pops and pool.

Aslo Ink,my Master had a "real" sword a present given to him when he acquired his 8th Dan.

hehe I thought when you said "you did not like"   you mistyped it. hehe
I would love to have met Bruce, in the movie "the dragon"   with Jason Scott Lee, when he flips out and smashes his closet door, and says" I just want to be a hero..."   (something like that)  it messes with me big time, He was my Hero, hell, he still is and now im 40  :lol
when I was younger I loved watching "Enter the Dragon"  hell all of his movies, but in enter the Dragon he puts a lot of his philosophies into it,  what a great movie!!
I have read and watched so much about the guy, there is so much bull crap out there about him.

I personally have never taken any "martial Arts"  I grew up on the streets and was fighting since I was very young, once I hit 13, I started to get into awesome shape at 15 I was built just like him, except I was white LOL,  I tried to emulate his moves and way, I think the first time I read his book I was 11 or 12.

I wish more people understood him, I actually have a friend who thinks he was not good and was just an "actor"   :rofl   he was so much more than that.
Have you read "The book of five rings"? (if not get it, its great!!!!)     another guy who was great, I personally think Bruce read that book and adopted many of Musashi's way's.    now that is a guy who understood how to dismantle people :lol

I very much love the samurai and there swords, there dedication, there love of life.   I have a very beautiful (modern made) Katana  folded between 8 to 10 times, clay used in the tempering extremely beautiful and deadly, scary sharp.

here is a peace of history, the Japanese would use cadavers, or convicted criminals to test there swords on, they would cut through the bodies and then scribe on the Tang how many it went through.
I paid around 1,300$ for my sword but you can get one that is "real" with the Tang scribed with the "body count" I saw one for sale at 14,000 lol wish I was Rich!!!

Sorry, but his abilities as a fighter have been massively over-hyped.

Here's one of my favorite posts in the threads...
Quote
Joe Lewis has earned my eternal respect for being the one man who trained under Bruce with big enough balls to flat out tell people, "Bruce was not a fighter."

...and, irony of ironies, the statement has earned him nothing but scorn in the martial arts community.

This is really a gem too.

We don't dispute that Bruce had an impact on the Martial Arts. What we're disputing are the myths and BS about him being virtually superhuman, or his superior fighting ability off-screen. Not to mention his fortune cookie philosophy blended with crap Jigoro Kano figured out 60+ years earlier.

and the end-all, be-all of Martial Arts does exist. It's simply called "MMA". You take all the best stuff from arts that are proven to be effective, like Judo, classic boxing, muay thai, sambo, jiu jitsu, greco-roman wrestling, and blend it all together until you can take the fight to where you want it, and seriously maim somebody. There's a reason why military combatives have switched to MMA curriculum with weapons mixed in, and a heavy, heavy emphasis on grappling.

I always wanted to learn Muay Thai in order to deal with the arms-length situations. I did do Capoeira for about a year, and found that it was easy enough to apply to actual contact, though at age 11 I wasn't in good enough shape to do anything that was truly beautiful to watch. I did wrestling for a while, so my experience with that and some basic grappling has the real close in stuff fairly well covered. Unfortunately, the most experience I have with boxing is either of the Wii variety or from the time I went to a friend's karate dojo and popped him one in his face as he stepped in for a throw (You would think that a kid who had been playing video games from age 5 and karate from age 6 would've had better reflexes.  :devil). Even so, I have great respect for those out there who have actually learned this stuff; seeing this magic in action makes me want to do something about these spaghetti arms of mine.

Indy,

While I dont exactly agree with you I get the point,MMA is as close to the best you can get,was sorta the basis of my 4 distance fighting.Actually it's 3 but 4 is added for humour and to express the fact that there's always a way"not" to fight.I wont go into what I've done, trained in etc. as I've stated as much as I do already.

But not counting the last 15 years I've trained most of my life.My father was a golden glover in 2 weight and would have like to see me follow him, except for me leading with my head,I sorta tried to do as he wished.

 Ink,

There so much hype, falsehoods and the like about Mr.Lee it's not surprizing when I hear or read things as in Indy's post. I will say this,my Master knows several of the Hollywood martial arts stars and not all are equal,in fact some are out right liars. All I know is he had great respect for only 3 of them and Mr Lee was first on that list.

Most people take for granted that they can join a school of arts,so many out there,so many styles. We used to call TWD, takeurdough and had names for others, all this while training and teaching.Belts, well they are the money makers and the more kinds you have to more...  I should stop b4 I get myself in trouble...

Safe to say Indy has a point,MMA is close to the "all round art" as you get.I highly recommend anyone wanting to learn look into a "good" school that teaches it.

sorry but you are misinformed,  just cuz something is on the net don't make it truth, and someone's opinion don't change the fact's.

I think the only reason Bruce Lee is such a legend is because he died young. Just like John lennon, JFK and Jesus. I'm not saying he was not a great man, but if he was still alive now he wouldnt be the legend he is.
And I don't know much, but I do know this. With a golden heart comes a rebel fist.
