Windows 7: A step backward?

I just got Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit for my laptop to replace Vista 64 bit. To me, it seems like a step back. It's even slower than ever! My CPU used to run at 3%-4% on idle, now it's running 45%-60%! Is there a guide to streamline it back down to at LEAST Vista level?

Sounds like you screwed something up... when I installed the RC on my machine it ran smoother than my XP partition initially (which wasn't very old itself).
Granted it was 32 bit.

Just chose the upgrade from vista option rather than the start-the-computer-from-scratch-and-loose-everything option...

clean install is always best IMO, then mirror your image for a back up for the just in case. I am running windblows 7 32 bit and XP. I am running dual boot but 7 runs fine and smooth for what I have used so faar

i ran the beta ver of win7 64 bit for about 6 months then decided to go back to xp pro.
i lasted 2 weeks b4 i got fed up with xp and went back to win7 beta.
im now using win7 pro x64 and i would not go back to xp.

i find win7 a lot more stable and seems to run games better.

Ya...clean install it for sure. My comps all run at 0-1% idle, I've got a C2D 2.2ghz and a C2Q 2.8 ghz, Athlon II 2.9 ghz.

After all sorts of things just STOPPED working (The mute light on my keyboard no longer functions even now...) I went to a clean install, and in addition to cleaning out my hard-drive (250GB of junk I didn't need, lol) the CPU speed is now idleing at 10%-30%, which is still much higher than the old.

I run an AMD Turion X2 64 Ultra (2.3GHz)

something is wrong mine idles at 0 to 1 % and that is with firefox open. and my old xp was the same way and it had mccaffey on.  post a dxdiag maybe somebody here can help you

You got WAY too much junk installed on that thing and its sucking up resources in all the processes running.

Already whiped it clean and did a fresh install. Still have the same issue. In addition, I have a dv6, which has one of those light-up touch-pads to control wifi and volume. When you mute the volume the light is supposed to go orange. Now it is stuck at white.
