LCD Monitor died
« on: January 23, 2010, 12:05:35 PM »
Woke up this AM to "Honey, the monitor won't come on".   Swap power cables, no dice.  "VC ok"?   It is fine.   Lug our 17" dell CRT back up monitor from the basement and viola!

Looking at this one right now and have my better half, on board.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236049

It is a 2x Award Winner, which I take somewhat into the issue.

I'm looking at 24" less than $250, for less "Wife Ack".   Anything over would be like a Captured Zeppelin, trying to fly over Berlin in 1943.   Let me know what you guys think.

Do you have any friends who are halfway competent with electronics and a soldering iron? Nine out of ten LCD monitors I have worked on were fixable with the replacement of around two dollars worth of parts. The electrolytic capacitors are generally the first parts to fail in a LCD monitor, and are the cheapest and easiest parts to replace.
I have brought at least four monitors back to life in the last three months.

Might I suggest a Samsung 24 1080p?

http://www.buy.com/prod/samsung-2494sw-24-widescreen-1080p-lcd-monitor-50-000-1-dc-5ms-dvi/q/loc/111/211959887.html

Less than the Asus, lower power consumption, and free shipping.

*edit* hmmmm...24 would be a tempting upgrade...

I've got the Samsung 23" P2350, under 200$ at Sam's club.

I'm very happy with mine, looking at getting one for the wife with tax rebate.

:neener: I got that same monitor WITH a built in webcam for 30 dollars less on ebay  :D  You'll love it though, great color reproduction, fast response, crisp picture, etc...

It's not the screen that is glossy, it's the plastic around it, I personally liked the glossy screen on my old hp monitor more though.

Can YOU VISIBLY tell the 3ms difference between the two? I mean come on just about 2 years ago people stopped prattling about 5ms refresh being the best thing in the world. 5ms refresh is amazing and the price is RIGHT!

Given that there can easily be 25 ms "real" difference between 2 monitors rated at the same settings .... I'd say ratings don't mean squat.

I can notice some ghosting on my 2nd monitor, which is a 6 year old Hercules Prophetview LCD, with a 20ms response (which was pretty good at the time).  Right next to it I have a nearly 3 year old Viewsonic with 5ms response time.  I can't see any ghosting.

As long as the LCD is not a knock off brand, I'd give a thumbs up for 5ms.

Yeah, it IS mainly older monitors with 15-20+ms responses that ghost, 5ms will work fine unless you're running something uber fast, faster than you will ever move or jerk around in AH.

Wife nixed the first one.

She's copacetic with this one.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236059

My LG L1932TQ that just went, was a 4ms, so I know a 5ms would be no problem.

Twinboom, when you prove that your eyeballs can tell the difference between 5 milliseconds and 3 milliseconds consistently...I'll consider a faster response time. In a few years you will be saying 10 nanoseconds is slow.

One thing to remember with lcds is that response times can be reported in several different ways. The reports are not always comparable. Another issue is with input delay which varies a lot between monitors. Input delay means the delay between actual movement in game and what you see on screen.

Input delay can be real bad so that when you move your head around the image seems to follow like it was attached to a long flexible rod, lagging behind visibly.
