Thanks guys! Ironically Chico is only a year old at this point, he was about 6 months when we got him from the pound, he won't live to see two years old however, unfortunately. I wish it were the case that we were bringing Sadie in to be part of the pack for an old dog. Cadence, the oldest is only 5 right now, still in his prime.
Curval, was your Chico named after the Marx brother? My first dog that I got when I moved out on my own, my wonderful Rottweiler was named Groucho. I'm a big Marx brothers fan. My second rott, that I got when Groucho finally passed I named Chesty, after Chesty Puller. He was Cadence's best friend, and mine too. He woke me up when my apartment burned a few years back, making sure that we got out safely. He went with me everywhere. He was my best friend in the world, through my bad divorce and losing everything in the fire and all. Somehow over the summer he and Cadence got out of the back yard, which had never happened before, and Chesty was hit by a car and killed. Saddest day of my life. Cadence fell into such a deep depression, much like me, that we got Chico to be his companion, and once they bonded, they've been close ever since. Chico did wonders for Cadence. And me too.
Also, Cadence and Chico are both pitbulls, they get along beautifully. I take them with me to play disc golf and to the Petsmart and to parks and all that. They meet other dogs and children all the time and are perfect calm balanced gentlemen. A while back at the park a kid asked if he could pet Cadence and then began sticking his hands and fingers into Cadence's mouth a second later. Cadence patiently put up with it while we told him not to do that but to pet him on his chest and neck instead. I believe in raising ambassadors to those two breeds, that are often misunderstood and get an undeserved bad rap. My dogs are socialized and obedient and aren't a danger to the public or other dogs. It's all in raising them right, socializing them and having the right bearing and demeanor. You've got to be the leader and they take their cues from you.
Raider, I'm sorry to hear that about your dog, I know it'll be tough when the time comes. All you can do is to love and care for him and not let him suffer. There's just no easy way about it.
