CAP, I have just grown weary of all the colonel bs that seems to eminate from the CAF along with their constant destruction of pieces of history.  I do know that shortly after FiFi was grounded, I was checking her out when we saw the aileron bell crank on the rear spar.  You could put your finger through the flanges mounting it to the spar.  Hardly like an inspection had been done in years...

Take that for what it is worth.

UUMM..........that sounds somewhat scary to me, and like someone needs to review their procedures, before they kill someone.

Might fly down there today, if I can convince my instructor that is :D

FIFI Flight Postponed 7/12/2010

The historic B-29 plane, FIFI, was supposed to take flight this morning.

However, weather and Federal Aviation Administration regulations prevented that from happening. The FAA is now requiring six crew members instead of four. The volunteer crew is stationed all over the country, making it difficult to call them in last minute.

To compensate those who came to watch the flight the Commemorative Air Force gave free tours of the cockpit. Crew Chief Dave miller says FIFI is the only flying B-29 left in the world and this piece of history is important to people all over the world.

"The preservation is very important… using it as more than a static display, to take it around and show it to people so they can hear it, and see it, and feel it and understand what the men and women who flew it really went through."

FIFI was produced in 1945, marking this year as her 65th birthday. $1.5 million has gone into restoring this plane, that is said to have ended WWII and saved millions of lives.

The CAF hopes to fly FIFI sometime this week. We will be giving updates as we receive them. If you have any questions about FIFI you can go to www.commemorativeairforce.org.

I am not going to leave for midland till I get word she is gonna fly!

It's a shame the engines needed to be replaced but I guess you can't expect the parts supply to be around forever.

We saw FIFI fly at an airshow in Elmira NY about ten years ago. What a great thing to see! Compared to the B17's you could really tell how much bigger they were. When we arrived at the airfield, we looked all over for the mighty B29 thinking it would be the largest plane there and easy to spot. Eventually, we found the "poor little thing" parked next to a C5 Galaxy! No disrespect. Almost any other plane parked next to a C5 would look small. It's something we talk about to this day. A great plane!
