which Gefoce 3 would you buy?
« on: November 30, 2001, 07:20:00 PM »
Well, I am going to buy myself a Christmas present, a Geforce 3.

Looking at Newegg.com, I didn't realize how many differetn brands of Geforce 3's there are. Gainward GF3, Visiontek GF3, GF3 Ti200, GF3 TI500, blaa, blaa

I know this much-

Geforce 3 (original) clock speed 200 Mhz
Geforce 3 TI200  clock speed 175 Mhz
Geforce 3 TI500  clock speed 240 Mhz

And depending on the brand, the prices vary wildly. For example, the asus GF3 is $328, while the Visiontek GF3 is $274, and the MSI GF3 is $238--all three from Newegg. Even the bad to the bone TI500 cards vary in price by manufacturer.

so what is good and what is not. I want an origional GF3 or a TI500, but I would like to hear you happy users experiences first. Please tell me!

Get the Gainward (Cardexpert) GF3 and then overclock it to Ti500 speeds. I have one and it performs very well. I run it at 240 core/520 memory.

Ammo, a fairly nice article on the Ge3's at Tom's Hardware.

NVIDIA Launches Titanium Series

Conclusions (The short story):

"Well, we certainly have one card that is faster than anything else before, the GeForce3 Ti500. However, the performance advance over previous GeForce3 cards is not that substantial, mainly because the memory bandwidth was only increased by some meager 8.7 %...

GeForce3 Ti200 will sell at a really attractive price point, offering the wealth of GeForce3's new DX8 features to a large audience. The performance of Ti200 may be some 5-15% lower than the 'old' GeForce3, but for the price Ti200 offers outstanding speed as well as features."

And with some GF3 Ti200 models, you can overclock to classic GF3 level performance.

Get leadtek ti200 I got one and I'm very pleased to it.

Memory clocks to 480Mhz easy (running atm..) and core goes high too, havent tested the limit yet.

Get leadtek because they have hdtv-out and very high quality 2D picture.

This is what I run it at the moment, stable:

You'll be able to clock an original GF3 higher...lower latency ram.

ammo,

i'll prolly be doin the same g3 upgrade soon too.

if you want the best without oc'ing, go for the Ti500. If you feel comfortable with overclocking and can walk back to the store in case you fry the card, go for the orig. G3.

i still have my geforceII ULTRA 64meg, and with my xp1800+ it pushes AH to 75fps at 1600x1200 32bit. So, with whichever g3 you get, i think you'll be more than happy!!

You were saying?

Leadtek Ti200 has exactly the same 3.8ns ram like the original.

I'd go for the Ti200 and OC it to run as fast as original G3's if you're concerned about price.  You can't go wrong either way, though.

I have a Hercules card myself (GeForce 2 GTS 64mb).  They are probably the most expensive of the nvidia based boards, but I didn't wanna wait, and that's all the GeForce 2 cards I could find in town (that was awhile back.)  Only one store in town had ONE left.   ;)  I am extremely pleased with the card, and Hercules does well with their drivers.  They won't be as fast as the latest Detonators, but you can be sure they'll be extremely stable.  Plus good feedback from Hercules when you ask a question via email, at least it was under 24 hrs in the one time I emailed a question to them.

gotta question what is the difference in these two cards--

[l]
1)CARDEXPERT GEFORCE3 64MB DDR(Mfr's #:V87GEFOR3), with TV-OUT & DVI - RETAIL NVIDIA GeForce3 GPU, 256-bit 2D & 3D graphics architecture AGP 2X/4X with Fast Writes Memory size up to 64MB with 4Mx16 ultra fast DDR SDRAM Support high resolution up to 048x1536@75Hz Build-in 350MHz

2)CARDEXPERT GEFORCE3 POWERPAK GOLDEN SAMPLE 64MB W/TV-OUT, VIVO(Video In & Out), DVI. Enhance Mode/Over-Clock. - RETAIL NVIDIA GeForce3 GPU, 256-bit 2D & 3D graphics architecture. AGP 2X/4X with Fast Writes. Memory size up to 64MB with 4Mx16 ultra fast DDR SDRAM. Support high resolution up to 2048x1536@75Hz. Build-in 350MHz RAMDAC with gamma correction. NTSC / PAL TV-Out with flicker filter. TV-Out resolution up to 800x600. Composite & S-Video TV-Out, LCD output with DVI connector [/l]

I could care less about bells and whistles, but would like to know if their is any performance advantages of one over the other.

Thx!

in your opinion, is it worth the $30 extra over the other card (#1)?
