Help with joystick calibration?

Anyone have tips for configuring the Logitech Wingman Extreme Digital 3D?
It's calibrated fine through its own software & Windows, and works great with other flight & non-flight sims I've tried ... but I can't seem to set it up right for AH. The slightest TOUCH gets that 'Don't move your controls so rapidly' admonishment, and I find even straight, level flight nearly impossible.
I tried several configurations of the dead space & dampening sliders to no avail.
Hoping someone has met and solved this problem before.

Appreciate the frank responses. Apparently our experiences have been differnt.
As I noted, this is the first game I've had this issue with, and I'm quite happy with the stick's performance.
Admittedly, I don't play a wide variety of sims, but I'm not ready to get a new stick just to play this game.
Thanks for the input, tho.

OK. I really like the look of this sim and think it has promise, so I broke down and bought a new joystick so I could get into it.
I checked some of the threads on joysticks, and bought one someone had recommended: the Saitek Cyborg 3D Gold USB.
But hey. Same problem. I literaly CANNOT TOUCH the stick, or it goes all kinds of ape sh*t on me. Setting the dead zone and dampening to max have no apparent affect.
I've tried out a variety of flight sims over the past couple of weeks looking for one I like, and as I mentioned earlier, I don't have this issue with them.
Can anyone walk me through the proper setup for the joystick? I'm obviously missing something if everyone else is able to play this game.
Nothing unusual about my PC setup that I know of. It's not top-of-the-line but it's less than a year old; Dell w/ PIII, 128mb, Rage128Pro, SoundBlaster, etc...

Dennis I am having the same prob with my Stick. But my stick is a Thrustmaster Fighter X. Now its got to be something other than the stick cause I got it from a freind of mine who also plays AH and it worked fine for him. Now my friend and me both have Soundblaster live sound cards. And the same mother board. The only thing that is truely different is our processors and our Video Cards. Which makes me want to ask you Dennis is your Video Card Based on the Nvidia Riva TNT chip? Mine is a Diamond Viper 550. And is a TNT chip. I did download the latest drivers from Diamond and Nvidia and neither of them solved my prob. I also checked the IRQs and none are sharing with either my Sound Card or my Video Card. Now my prob isnt as bad as Dennis has described. Ill be able to fly fine for a while but then I get that same msg about moving my controls to much. Now I can t keep my plane on auto pilot either cause my stick is constantly jerking. When I go to the calabration screen I can see the inputs spiking all over the place. And no number of recalabrating and sliding of dampining and deadband sliders help. Something of intrest though it does jerk when Im in a gun turret but I dont get the stick locking up. Hmm. Or the error about moving my stick to much.
Thanks for anyones help with Dennis and My probs.

Jougal,
Here's what finally solved the problem for me:
I downloaded a joystick-centering utility from The Stickworks called CTFJ
http://home.att.net/~stickworks/swdownld.html
. For some reason, that program worked for setting up the proper amount of deadspace to eliminate spiking & sensitivity where the in-AH setup hadn't worked for me. Then I found this site posted under the 'nose bounce' thread here:
http://www.reddragons.de/aceshigh/tactical.htm
It's a pretty good remedial explanation of how to use the AH joystick setup.
After calibrating/centering with CTFJ, I went into AH and calibrated again. Then I took to the air and experimented with the sliders while in offline flight.
I'm still tweeking, but at least I can fly now and the autopilot stays on when I engage it.
Before long I should be good enough to be cannon fodder for some of the aces around here.
Best of Luck.
