To the P-40E driver between V17 and V21
« on: October 09, 2010, 12:17:19 AM »
Outstanding flying! I don't know how you stayed out of the trees during that long fight you had with the two C205s. That was some impressive flying we could not get a good lead on you. We were both on fumes and BBs at the end my squadmate and I decided to make one more pass and you got him somehow. I barely made it into V21 on fumes and my flying was over for the night. I'll be able to get your name from the logs hopefully. I just wanted to say great flying and this old fart was actually tired after that encounter.

Nah, ran across most of the AKs, think they were in spit9s! They made a valiant effort to escort our B-26s in for a second run.

Tippo was the P-40 pilot.

Thanks for the compliment Shifty!  We were cursing you.  We were trying to get out of there and you had us pinned down.  If I would have known you were critical on fuel, I may have had some hope.  Tomahawk was with me in the other P-40 until we eventually were separated.  Termite was with me as an observer which helped in keeping SA.  At the last stages of the fight, it was just your partner and I in planes.  I finally decided to change tactics - that my only solution was to let him get on my six then try to out-stall or get some sort of reversal.  Termite was reporting, "he's on your six", but I just let come in.  At the right moment, I threw on the brakes and hugged the ground.  He took off my right flap, but overshot me.  I poured on the throttle, hit the power button and tried to pull the nose up for a shot, but he smartly climbed so that I couldn't get my nose high enough.  I was in better shape this time because his higher E was not so great.  He climbed, made a 180 turn back towards me and I was going to pass under him.  I thought this was great because I was nose up and he was nose down.  After passing I would pull the stick back, loop over the top and come out with about matching E.  As we approached head-on, neither one of us took the HO shot.  From my view, I thought he passed me.  I was making my loop up over the top, then  I looked at my text buffer and it showed that we had collided and he went down.  Sorry that it turned out that way, but I have to admit, I was exhausted and relieved it was over.

Good flying and fighting to both of you and <S>.  I survived most of that scenario by help from squaddies and other friendly P40s.  I enjoyed every bit of it.

That was the first time I've seen an engagement play out that long in an FSO. As well as you flew it was fitting that you made it home. That's one frame I'll always remember.

I think that might have actually been me. I was in a fight for about 15 minutes with two C2s. I checked the film and it was Shifty and Bino. You guys were persistant lol. I finally got desperate because I wasn't sure how long I could last, and how much fuel i had, so I got in a good HO on Bino and took his wing off. (Looking at the logs, Tippo did get the kill, so he must have shot Bino up before hand) After that, you let me go. I bugged out of there. Watching the film, I noticed that there were a lot more C2s in the area as i left, but I guess they never saw me due to con range being 3k. Anyway, it was a lot of fun, if not frustrating fight for me because I was almost helpless against those much faster planes. You guys stayed disciplined and didn't give me much to work with. That one shot I did get in was out of pure desperation. I'm still surprised I didn't die. <S> to both of you!

Here is a link to the film....sorry about the crappy hosting service, there will be a popup, just close it and then download the file.

Okay that was you BigR, I'll bet Tippo was tied up with two other guys by this time. Because we did have other squadmates engaged with other P-40 stragglers.
Bino and I were debating the last 4 minutes or so on letting the P-40 go because our fuel was so critical and I was down to 7.7s and not many of them. The pass he died on was the one where we both said okay one last time.  Everytime I made a pass on you I was expecting to kiss a tree and I had to stay fairly fast. I didn't even consider popping flaps because I figured the 7.7s probably wouldn't kill you on one pass and then I'd be low and slow with a pissed off P-40.

Great flying BigR it was a fun time!

Yup, Tomahawk and I were tied up with 2 C2's.  Those guys were also persistent, not giving an inch, not letting us leave the area.  I thought the kill I received was from the C2 that collided with me.

Well done BigR!  I'm glad you made it ok.

I believe that was AKdog you where fighting.

I ran into AKDogg late in the frame.  I was able to best him due to a friendly 109 tag teaming him with me.  The Dogg put up one heck of a good fight.   :salute

I was riding with Strokes in his p40. We were egressing from v17 when he got jumped by the italian reserves..  Most of the p40's egressing from there had no ammo due to strafe runs on 17.  Poor strokes was trying to ram the enemy, lol.  :salute
