**TECH NERDS AND KNOW-IT-ALLS, LETS FIX THIS ONCE AND FOR ALL**
« on: February 12, 2001, 03:10:00 PM »
I am talking about the DAMN Roger Wilco Illegal Operation MANY people including me are having.

It happens when you run AH with ROGER WILCO enabled. When you exit the game, you get an illegal operation and have to REBOOT in order to play AH again or ANY OTHER 3D application. The only workaround is to disable ROGER WILCO.

Problem is, I WANT TO USE RW.

I used to have the problem with WindowsME and DirectX8. I always thought I was a WinME problem so yesterday I did a format and installed Windows 98 SE.

The problem is still there.
I am pissed.

Here are my system specs:

Duron @ 1Ghz
A7V 133, @ 100Fsb
256mb PC133 SDRAM
GeForce2 32mb GTS
SB Live! Value
5400rpm hard disk

DirectX 8

Windows 98 SE (Also happened with WinME)

I CANNOT uninstall DirectX 8, as I have many games that use it. And anyways there are several people having the problem using DX 7.
I have the latest version of RW. All the latest drivers for my hardware. Win98SE has been updated from the MS site.

I AM GOING INSANE HERE.

HTC, anyone, HOW can I fix this??

I believe that the problem lies in the way Roger Wilco is set to use memory while running programs.  It is designed not to be very memory intensive and for some reason when you exit a game and free up alot of memory it doesent handle it well...can you exit RW while you are still in the game THEN exit the game, see what kinda result that makes.

I just installed Dx8a and the problem is still there.

For anyone interested, here is the information on the Illegal Operation I'm getting:

Spat, thanks.
The problem is probably related to the Sound Blaster Live!, DirectX8, AND Roger Wilco.

I'm gonna try out what Wobblynoodle suggested. I'll let you know the results.

I tried Alt-Tabbing and closing RW first, but it crashed my computer.
Latest SBLive! drivers dont help, neither does DirectX-8a.

I'm pretty sure if HTC would look into this it would be fixed quickly..

Ok I THINK I found the solution..
on the ROGER WILCO setup, on sound recording select WAV RECORDING instead of DIRECTSOUND RECORDING..

I have entered and exited AH several times and no crashes. I'll let you all know if this is whats causing the DBHELP problem.

Sound like an issue with Dx8 and 8a with RW.  There's not really anything HTC can do about it.

Switching to Wav recording in the RW setup fixed it completly. And it sounds great, cristal clear according to the people I tested with.

I'm running Win98 SE, DirectX 8 & RW using DirectSound without a problem.  I don't use auto-start for RW in AH tho'...I start it before hand, so I can move the window to my second monitor.  Not sure if that has anything to do with it or not.
