Your favorite Fw 190 variants and why
« on: January 01, 2011, 11:25:33 AM »
Like the title says which Fw 190 is your favorite and for what reasons, my favorite is the 190A-5 I like it because it is the lightest and most manuverable of the 190 family and I also like it because of the history involved with early 190's

I've been learning the Dora, and love it. It is likely the best plane I've flown above 10k and 300kts. Once the manuevers takes you below 10k and 300kts you are in no-mans land. Once you are below 5k you are on life support and had just better get the crap out of town. I have done some serious damage in a -51 below 1k and 200 kts. It is a pretty decent stall fighter though the Dora is a pig in honey down there, by comparison.

I'll give the A5 a shot. I do like its heavier firepower.

I like the A5 with twin 20mm only. It's a real effort to keep it flying smooth but the satisfaction it can bring is high. I like also the A8 with 30mm, for cherry picking in furballs it is a real shark.

I fly Doras for straight up fighter missions, preferably in situations where I can grab some altitude.

The A8 is reserved for base take ops, since it's gun package is ideal for strafing and vulching.  I'll also use it for taking out bombers over a besieged airfield.  It's tough enough so that even if I get nailed by the buff's guns I can land it.

The A5 is ideal for shorter ranged base defense, especially in situations where you don't really have time to gain much altitude.  Against carrier attacks it can match any CV based aircraft, especially if the ship's AA guns are limiting altitude.

I don't have much stick time in the F model, but I've used it some against GV's with limited success, mostly due to my own lack of experience.  I'll wager my gv kill rate will go up with practice.

As for the Ta152, I restrict its use to killing high bombers on strat runs.

A8, because it is far and away the most challenging of the set (the F8 obviously excepted) to fly well in a dogfight.

Some day I trust I will learn how to do so.

another question realated to the Fw-190, How does the F8 ( Ground attack model) compair with other dedicated air to ground platforms in AH ie. P-47, Typhoon, B25c/h, and the F4U-1D?

It doesn't. It's what the Germans used to replace the Ju-87. In that regard it's superb. However, it can't carry 3000lbs of ord like the P-47 can. It can't shoot a 75mm cannon like the B-25H (not a good example, though). It can't dogfight like either the F4u or P47 after it drops its ord.

It's not all bad, but compared to the better, more capable, US rides, it's a non-entity. Most 190A8s could be fitted with field kits to carry the same bomb racks and whatnot. The only real difference is the 1000lbs of armor it carries.

It's 490 lbs heavier than the already-overweight 190A8. If the A8 ever gets fixed that will be even higher. A better comparison would be to say it's 1,085 lbs heavier than a A-5 (not counting aux tank or ammo). It's a real pig to dogfight in.

The upside is you'll rarely lose oil before you lose your wing, tail, or pilot. There's actual armor modeled in for all that weight, unlike the A-8.

I like the A8 with the 30mm package, full fuel and no drop tanks.  It's an awsome buff killer and is capable enough against other fighters if you can keep it fast.  If they don't see you coming there's no break turn that can save them.

Krusty failed to mention the incredible armor piercing rocket package on the F8.  One rocket can kill about any armored vehicle in the game and you get 12 of them plus a bomb.  In comparison the American rockets take a salvo of three to clean kill a Panzer or something lesser in armor.  So let's do the math; 13 GV kills in an F8 or 6 max in a P-47 (Flaks and above in armor thickness).  Hmmm...  Which do you think is superior in that roll?  The armor on the F8 is also superior to any aircraft except the IL2.

190A-5 is the "go to" 190, imo.  It is far more maneuverable and stable than the other 190's, it turns better than most think, too.  For interceptor work: the D-9.  For bomber hunter/ambush: the quad 20's w/ plenty of ammo on the A-8 are nice.  For attacking gv's the 12 Pb1 rockets on the F-8 (not to mention the extra armor around the cowling and pilot) can not be beat.

Oddly enough the A8 is the first plane I flew consistently well in.  Trying to master it made me a better pilot in the long run, to the point where I feel totally spoiled in a Spitfire.

Some tips on flying the "Ugly Stepsister"  of the Focke Wulf family:

1. Grab Alt.  You need it to start with, the more the better.

2. Assess the Environment.  The A8 doesn't have the escape velocity of the Dora, nor the additional turning ability of the A5.  When you get to a fight, look around at the situation before you go in.  Do you have advantage in numbers or alt?  The worse the odds, the less time you should stay in the fight.

3. Conserve E as much as possible.  You can't get it back easy so hold on to what you have as long as possible.

4. Save some E to get the heck out of dodge. If you hear a little voice in your head saying now would be a good time to extend...listen to it. Greed kills, especially in an A8.

5. You have less of a margin for error on that stall warning.  Make your stick movements as gradual as you can.  The only time you should jerk the stick around hard is when you're employing your roll rate.

5. Use the vertical.  It's the best way to conserve E.  Loop, High Yo-Yo, climb away from low and slow targets.

6. Fly like an opportunistic, sneaky, and dare I say it, cowardly little  :devil .  Hit em when they're not looking, and run away laughing.

7. HO 'em if they come straight at you.  Anyone dumb enough to charge directly at an A8 is signing their own death warrant. They might get you, but you will definitely get them.  Open up at 1.0 and they will fly right to their doom.

8. One major advantage of the A8 is hitting power.  You can shred almost anything that crosses your gunsights.  You have tons of ammo so take any kind of shot you can get.  300 is a pretty good balanced convergence setting for the 4x20mm package.  The 30mm option is kind of overkill, viable for bomber kills, but since you can land effective hits on bombers at -600, why risk getting close.

9. Oil is optional.  You can fly for a while without it, but I wouldn't recommend fighting without it unless you have no choice.

10. One situation where the A8 can actually survive for extended periods on the deck is against a CV based attack, especially when the carrier planes are coming in low.  If you can climb out a little but stay below the ack, you can actually zip down low and hi-yo-yo the Navy boys to death.  Not even a Hog can withstand your firepower.

11. The A8 is one of those birds that is tough enough to get you home even with some parts missing.

Treat her right, and she will treat you right!
