Wntts are your underwater textures. Let's say you put a coral texture in your texsrc folder and name it wntt0001. Now when you paint over the water with your grass texture ntt0001 you will see that new coral texture, as long as your water is shallow enough for it to be seen.

Yep and there are 2 sets  the wntt0001 would be the PTO set od textures, and the wntt1001 would be the ETO set.

If your wanting your terrain texture and tile set to be the ETO type, in your terrains source folder put a text file it there called defset.txt  and inside this txt file
simply put the number one "1" without the quotes.
Thats it it will then be an ETO terrain.

Thanks for the tip Midi.  I use the PTO terrain textures by default for their variety but it is good to know how to set them to the ETO type.

I am hoping that some day the terrains will use a bmp file to specify which texture set (PTO or ETO) to use with an individual tile so you could use both sets within a single terrain.  Ultimately there could be a desert, snow, jungle, mountain, farm, forest, island, etc texture sets created that could all be use in a single terrain.

I have my water looking nice.. one problem.. If I unchecked "Detailed water" and leave "Detailed terrain" checked in the graphics options, in game  I only see the texture I used to paint under the ocean and I see no ocean at all..I only see the nttxxxx I used to under paint in the water..

If I unchecked both detailed water and detailed terrain My ocean becomes land the water is gone. It looks like sand and grass..

If I run with both detailed water and detailed terrain the ocean shows very well with all the depth variations under painting ext.. great for those that fly with the detailed boxes checked but whats the fix for those than don't we cant have an ocean that looks like land..

All this only hapens to the areas of the ocean were I have painted or shaded the shallow areas of water ..ie coral reefs, sandbars, ect all other areas of the ocean are normal.

That cant be right.. :headscratch:

Yep, that's the way it is...

I made a picture showing the same terrain shot with differing Advanced Graphics settings.  I usually have local reflections also enabled, but turned it off since it would be showing the canyon walls on the water, which I didn't need for these examples.  You'll also notice two blue blotches in the three bottom shots showing the lowest settings; these are terrain type "deep water"; the rest of the "water" terrain is a combination of "sandy grass (customized color)" for the shallow shoreline and "river bed (customized color)" for the deeper parts.  So, it would appear that if you use anything but "deep water" for your water, it's hard to tell that it's water if you run lower graphics settings.

Well that stinks,, not everyone can run at higher settings, they cant enjoy an other wise great looking terrain. that in it self is OK but to have to look at sand were there is supposed to be water... That's just goofy. we must have done something wrong.. :headscratch:

We as in "you and me"?  Nope.  Load up TwinRvr or any other terrain with cool water features and play with the detailed settings.  It is what it is.

Unless someone gets to it first, I'll do a write-up on changing terrain colors in lo-res mode.  In the TE, you can change the texture colors of the terrain in lo-res that is independent of the actual textures being used.  I had to do this with my last two terrains (TwinRivr was all green in lo-res until fixed).

From the TE readme:

Quote
SETTINGS: Terrain Type Settings.

Here is where you can set up the names for your textures, as well as change the base colors for ocean / river color.
There is also a "chage selected color" button which allows you to change the displayed color for the terrain type on low detailed settings.
You will find a "low detail" check box on the lower left to see what the terrain will look like in low detail.

I guess I try it and see what happens...

What Dot quoted is what I was referring to.  If using default textures, no real changing is needed, but if using custom textures, you'll most likely need to adjust the texture colors for lo-res to make it match good with the higher-res look.

To get to this, turn your terrain low-res mode (check box near bottom left of the TE), then at the top click Settings->Terrain Type Settings.  Then select the terrain type who's color you want to adjust, click Change Selected Color and you will be given 3 color sliders to play with.  When you have what you want click OK, then OK a 2nd time in the box underneath.  Repeat for as many textures as needed.  Too easy. :salute
