G.Fiftski
« on: June 11, 2011, 04:33:30 AM »
Recently I did some Italian bomber skins on the Betty bomber as a scenario substitute. The I-16 is often used as a Italian G.50 substitute in scenarios so I figured I'd do a matching skin for that as well.

While interesting, I had to sit and wonder at your comment that the I-16 is often used as a G.50 in scenarios.

Huh??

I don't think it's been used in one scenario yet, let alone in the MTO subbing as a G.50.

On top of that while it may share some small similarities with a G.50, it neither has the performance nor the firepower of one. G.50s were noted as being "okay" nimble but not having and overly small turn radius. It's got about the right speeds but the G.50 has a lot more range and totally different characteristics.

I applaud the skin, but I don't really see the "sub" as a good one.

You are right Krusty, I don't know where I got the idea that it was a common substitute. I thought I saw it listed in an event write up somewhere but I can't remember which one.

However I can't think of a better plane than the I-16 to sub as an early war Italian fighter and having planes that look at least something like the real thing adds to events IMO.

I'll post a couple more screenshots later and send you the skin Ranger.

both of those Italian fighters would be good to see, along with the French D520 and MB152.   :)

Great skin Greebo!

I-16 is a good sub for G.50.

Hopefully we'll get the real one one day.

<OT> Also many thanks for the FiAF DC-2 skin for the C-47. I Agree that it doesn't belong to the MA but will be great for Kanttori's map for example.

G.50 has slightly lower wing loading than I-16 Type 24 and actually several Finnish Air Force pilots gave high praises for its maneuverability. One guy saying "you could do anything with it!" Practical endurance on operational sorties was one hour and that's a lot of flying at cruise settings. In AH at full throttle the practical range wouldn't differ significantly. It would be longer but hardly anything when subbing aircraft types.

If you send it to me, I'll make sure it gets into an AvA terrain.  I'll give Raven first dibs:

I'm fairly sure he'd use it in his terrain, but if not, I'll make sure it gets in one of mine.  Thank ya much. :salute
