Never once seen an article where the pilot chickened out to leave the passengers on their own. Or froze at the stick. Its a good thing  :salute

Well done by the pilot but why did he climb after dropping off the passengers? Maybe he was trying to move the burning blimp away from the passengers after they jumped but still, he was 6 meters of the ground, fly a little ways off, put the airship on the ground and get the hell out. Anyone have the real answer, or a more educated guess?
The real problem is anyone should feel like they can come to this forum and make a wish without being treated in a derogatory manner.  The only discussion should be centered around whether it would work, or how it would work and so on always in a respectful manner.

3 passengers jumped out. He probably ballooned up because of the weight decrease.

no idea, but that might have been his objective. maybe he just knew that something was going to happen? and when the helium was heated from the fire, it would expand, yes? so the blimp would rise? maybe it wasnt the pilot who was climbing, maybe it was just the helium heating up.

Thanks tupac, the sudden change in weight hadn't even crossed my mind. It makes more sence now.

The German reports are a bit different on this than the Daily mail article.

So far it's being reported:

- Blimp came down for a landing and for unknown reasons slammed to hard into the ground. Landing gear broke and fire started.
- Blimp "bouncing" back to 2 meters (not 6, but 2m ~ 6 feet). Pilot yells something like "I have crashed her" or "we have crashed". Fire starts and rapidly spreads.
- Passengers jumping out. Probably due to sudden weight loss, blimp shoots back into the sky. Passengers on the ground and other witnesses hear the pilot's screams
- Finally the ship falls back to the ground.

Of course nothing is official at this point

He went up because 600 pounds of ballast just left the aircraft.
