I had both Ford and Mopar running at one time.  For me, nothing, and I mean NOTHING, sounded better than a Mopar engine on full boil.  Small or big block.

ohhh my 340 sounded so nice....had a bumbed up cam, not huge, just enough to give it that slight pause.

what was nice about the Carb on the 340 was the primaries were small...the secondaries though were massive...and wow when I put the peddle down.....it had a bad quarter mile...it had 289 gears....but oh boy on the highway.....back in my younger crazier days....the movie vanishing point has nothing on me..... :o

except I was lucky there were no police chases...only once in TX I was clocked at 101 from a state trooper....he gave me no ticket as long as I promised to never come back to Texas.  :rofl

ink, you forgot the 68 hemi dart...same quarter mile time as its cuda sister.

trying to remember what mopar was said to be able to do 200mph for 200 miles...i know it was a hemi car but can't remember the rest.

I believe it....The 340 in my Challenger was unbreakable...and I didn't even have the 4 bolt main version.

I went about 1400 miles in 17 hours.....I seriously put that Challenger to the test....I am not talking race it once in awhile....every day I drove that thing like I was at nascar, lost 3 "races" in the 6 and a half years I owned it.

biggest mistake in my life was selling that car.....

it had the High flow water pump that was put on Police cars(very rare)...the High flow exhaust manifolds (That flow like headers also very rare) plus my rear end was an 8 3/4 but it was the beefiest version,  its internals I believe were nearly identical to the dana 60....

yup very dumb for selling it....ran perfect, only reason I sold it was..... I was addicted to it. :o

I wish I still had my 69 Road Runner.  Had it not been for losing an argument with a tree at 50MPH, I would still have that car.

as much as i like my fords....one of my favorite things to see, when i used to be down at the drag strip every weekend, was a mopar not doing quite so well off the line....but almost without fail, they'd pull right on by nearly anything midrange, and top end.

Of the mopars, I feel the 340 was the big overachiever and had the best sound.....in stock form.

I had a 1968 SS396 chevelle with 1969 trim and the nader lights deleted and it was much faster with the W34 olds toronado engine in it (had to find different valve covers)....which makes sense since that engine made 400hp and 510 ft. pounds of torque with the super low riser toronado intake.

Someone had put a torker455 intake on it but had ground off lettering and painted it genuine olds blue.

it was faster with the olds in it, probably due to the fact that chevy was never really all of what it's pumped up to be today. well....'cept the corvette.......

I got a friend that had a #'s matching 70 Superbird...he traded it for a non #'s matching 71 hemi cuda rag top 4 speed...just standing next to that car is a crazy experience.

i should also add that i had 2 74 road runners, 1 with a 4 speed, and a 74 plymouth......the one that looked like a dart..........with a 318. and an 85 5th ave. that 5th ave got me from orlando to nj in 14.5 hours.  :devil

those are nice....out side the hay day...but they would be worth some good money.

318 tough little motor

my least favorite is the gas hog 360 still a strong motor though

the 5th ave had the lean burn 318. did really good mileage, but had trouble out accelerating a ford tempo.  :rofl

a guy pulled up in front of my house one day, while i was putting the transmission back in the road runner, and offered me a number that made me happy, for both of them. i'm suspecint i should've at least kept the 4 speed car. same thing happened with the dart look alike......got offered a good number, and watched it drive away.

while they're not overly powerful, i personally think that the 318 is a solid engine, and if taken care of will never let one down. my 97 dakota's sittin at 126k miles, and still running strong. the only reason i'll not see it hit 150k+, is 'cause it's gettin sold to help pay for the new gt.

I once witnessed a challenger T/A with a 340 6 pack throw number 3 rod! It made quite the impression on me and the hoodand drivers side fender! :devil

Then there was the pole vaulting maverick grabber that threw a driveshaft then atempted a half gainner!

But nothing sounds like a 426 with dual quads and dumpcaps!

if it was  a real TA it wouldn't have been a real 340.(cant remember the actual displacement,I think they were actually a smaller displacement but I could be wrong).

It would have been a 4 bolt main...he must have been revving that thing to high heaven.

I know a 340 in a 68 barracuda that can take 8000 all day long.....(major work into though, guy probably has as many thousands as it can take in RPM :rofl)

oh man I just love the Mopars

one night, i had a chevy malibu wagon that i had to give a head start to on gamblers night. he was running high 10's, i was dialed near 10.2 or so. anyway, i'm running him down, and suddenly, his nose drops....then i see his driveshaft come out from underneath his car....it didn't flip him. it just came out, and hit twice before it went over top of me. scared the watermelon outta me, as there was really nothing i could do, 'cept hope for the best.
