I'd just say "back the way you came" and kick them out

I personally would've showed them where they were on the map just to get them past that thought, hush up, and move on, but that's just me.

It might've been as simple as them not having any concept what '5 miles' looks like too.

Everywhere hands out drivers licenses to anybody with a pulse.  Driving is no longer treated as a skill by most people, nor is it generally the first priority on the person's mind who is doing it.  That's the scary part to me.

bolded........this is true. i deal with a lot of jersey drivers that aren't much better.

i didn't show her where on the map she was, partially due to the fact it was irrelevent, as even without a "feel" for 5 miles, there's always the trip meter.....and even more helpful......there's signs. you know....those things that we use when we're lost?

and of course, i couldn't read the dam thing, 'cause my old guy glasses were up front, and i wasn't going back up there.

Two nights ago on my drive home I got cut off 7-times... by the same driver.   I was laughing each time after the 3rd one and by the fate we were both heading relatively the same cource.  It's that time of year I think, beware the idiots.

here's tonight's.

guy pulls up in a brand new beemer 7 series. has a nail in his tire. i've got the shop lights out, as i'm up here finishing up paperwork, and about to leave. he comes in, and asks me if i can plug his tire. i tell him i can in the morning, but i've been closed since 530, everything's turned off, and everything's locked up.
know what he says? i'm a cop, can ya help me out?

most cops i respect, and if he'd have come even just 30 minutes early, i'd have been able to help him out.......but c'mon.......

The woman was driving?

What did you expect?

Should've gone out there and backhanded the man across the face until he had the sense to take the wheel.

well, first off, i don't do that........unless he got physical first. then he's dogmeat.  :devil

he had come in during my direction giving, and was having just as much trouble as she was understanding the directions.

it STILL amazes me that anyone at ALL could have trouble understanding directions which contained TWO WHOLE TURNS.

about the time they started arguing with me I would have given them directions with 'my special shortcut' that put them somewhere in BFE :D
