I think he forgot to add field elevation to maximum ack altitude at the field in question.

Entirely possibly, thats a good point.

Although I've noticed that complainers tend to exaggerate a bit, I would not be surprised if he posted the vid and he was flying at 5k at 300mph ;)

Tonight I was flying a spit over an airbase. I was about 7.5K above the ground and flew level over the town at about 410mph and one hit from the ack took a wing off. I can't remember the last time I flew near ack and didn't get a 1 ping death. Really puts a damper on the flight part of the game and is what keeps me in GV's. Anyone else experience this kind of crap with planes?

LOL!!! That's nothing. ACK is suppose to shoot you down. How about this story....

I was chasing a set of buffs at about 5K over OUR CV. In my first pass I lit one of the buffs engine on fire and as I climbed out an ACK burst popped in front of me and took out my engine. MY OWN ACK!

I got in another plane and went looking for another fight.

If it were auto-puffy ack, I could see your complaint.  But flying near a town or field and getting shot down is your own fault.

Rule of thumb:  Be at least 8K over base level (if the base is 4K base, then you need to be at least 12K) and you should be safe from the majority of autoack.  The slow shooters might get a round or two up to you, and there might be someone in a manned gun who could still reach out and touch you...  but that's the best advice I have.

The OP said he was flying over an airbase at 7k in a Spitfire.  Does that not sound like someone waiting to cherry pick some hapless sucker willing to try and lift from the field?

I'm sure you do, but hovering over a field looking to pounce on someone who just cleared the field is a cherry pick in my book.  It is a vulch when they are on the runway or landing/taking off.  A "pick" as commonly used, is when you take out an opponent fighting with one of your friendlies.

Call it what you will.

I call it being an ambush predator.  It's why I love maps with good GV spawns and lots of hills... you can hide your plane, be low enough to not show dar but still have a bit of alt to look down on the field and hopefully attract jabbos up to bomb what they think are GV's attacking.  Then flying down the side of the hill, or around the corner and timing a pass to hit em from the side when they're not looking is the best.

I'm a little curious if anyone read more than 1 sentence of my post. So far only 2 or 3 people have actually understood what I posted. Try again guys.

I have similar stories with CV ack while I'm at 50k feet or so. Seriously though, not even in visual range and first puff takes out oil. This has happened half a dozen times in last 2 months. Now I just stay away from CVs.

Chaser, without exception, I suspect everyone in game has had that happen at some time or other - I certainly have. The best advice I can give you, if you want to fly a plane, is get with a trainer - they are freely available, work to get together with you when times coincide, and make the flying part much easier to a. understand, and b. be more enjoyable.

Yes, it sucks when you get hit by flak, but it happens, it happened in the war too. This game will give you many lumps and bumps, best plan is to learn from them and not make the same mistake again.

For the rest of you, quit giving him grief and try giving him advice to help him out - this is how people are driven away from the game, and how we lose potential pilots.

I'm the worst pilot ingame ya know!!!

It's all unrealistic crap requested by people who want pie in the sky actions performed without an understanding of how things work and who can't grasp reality.

Very true, Chaser is not a pilot and more of a tanker, i've been slowly working with him on staying in the air for a tour and learning the basics of staying alive, he found that out on his first sortie the other day when he survived 15 angry bishops chasing us down.

He had no experience and survived his first real sortie, I just gotta work with him on staying alive and out of the spitfire.
