HTC Inspire will not connect to PC
« on: January 16, 2012, 11:42:25 PM »
I'll start a new thread since this is a completely different topic. Basically it's what the title says. Used to, when i plugged in a usb cable to my phone I could access my phone through my computer. Now my computer doesn't even detect that it's been plugged in, however, it does still charge off of a computer. I've been looking through out the internet and have found that this is a VERY common problem with the HTC Inspire. But from what I've read HTC will do absolutely NOTHING to address the issue. I've tried several things that have worked for other people and still haven't fixed mine.

What I've tried:

• Restarting the phone
• Removed SD card and reinserted
• Removed battery, SD card, and SIM card for 30 seconds then replaced all three
• Made a copy of the SD card on my pc (using a SD card reader) then formated the SD card
• Turned off fast boot
• Made sure "ask when connected" was checked
• Made sure to use an HTC brand USB cable

None of the above worked. Does anyone here know any other things to try?

Also for anyone who hasn't seen the other thread it's an HTC Inspire running Android 2.3.3 for the OS.

I actually haven't started the tethering thing yet. I'm trying to mount it as a disk drive so I don't have to take the SD card out everytime I want to put pictures on my PC.

However, I did try changing it to USB tethering and the computer still didn't detect the phone.

Try the disc drive setting.  I always just pull the card to move stuff around.  The inspire is nice too since you don't have to remove the battery to get at the card.  Just be sure to go into the SD card settings and choose unmount SD card...

My HTC inspire works fine in windows 7 (letting windows install it's own driver), and it worked fine before and after rooting. What version of windows?

I'm running Windows 7. Mine used to work fine but randomly stopped working one day.

Could be a bad data port...

Did you buy an aftermarket cable? There is a thin cable just for charging. The cable for data is heavier. I have the same phone and discovered that awhile back. Both are available from the aftermarket.

It's been awhile since I've used the original cable, It got completely destroyed. I used a Nokia cable for the longest time but I don't remember ever plugging it up to a PC while i was using it. I recently bought a new HTC cable off the internet and it will charge, but not connect.

Then it sounds like a driver issue. Uninstall the drivers currently installed, and then let windows re-install it. If that doesn't work, google for the drivers.

You bought the charging cable and not the DATA one. Common mistake.

I went back and checked my purchase, as it was only a few weeks ago, and it was listed as a USB data sync cable. Perhaps they had it listed wrong.

Hmm if it is a data cable then there is another setting. When you connect your phone to your PC do you get a popup on the phone asking how to connect?

No that stopped happening a long time ago. The thing is, i've been through several cables but I only ever used the original to connect to the PC untill now. Sometime after the original was torn up there was a software update for the phone. That was months ago and I've just recently connected it to a PC to get some pictures off of it. So i really don't know if the software update had any effect on it or not.

Also I've checked the setting and I do have "ask when connected" checked so it should pop up the prompt box when connected if it detects a PC.

I received that update too and have no issue.

I would suggest taking the phone and the cable your using to your carrier and let them look at it.
