And penguin has a point: there was no reason to assume you were lying. Sometimes a man just needs to get things off his chest, and your story didn't have anything that was even improbable in it, yet alone something that would tip us off that you were lying.

What am I 'buying into'?  Your story?  Yes.  I had no reason to doubt you, really.  Should I assume that people are lying and attempting to manipulate me when they tell me something about themselves?  Why?  Besides the endless feelings of isolation that such a lifestyle brings, it's just as illogical as not being skeptical at all.  While it's true that not all such tales are genuine, doing such things will quickly earn you a place of contempt anywhere.  Sure, looking back on your post through a lens of cynicism I can see where your tricks poked through, but is that what you want me to be?  A cynic?  I've lived like that, and found out that even mean people don't actually care enough to do those kinds of things, so you're better off assuming honesty in normal conversation.
