You can get 20 years for selling weed.

Therein lies the problem...... everyone wants what they do to have lesser charges or time frame.

That is why we are stuck with so many in prison.

So the reason we have so many people in prison is because all the prisoners want lighter sentences?

I have a buddy that used to do taxidermy.  He did 3 years in prison and spent another 7 on parole for selling a stuffed duck to undercover agents.  I'm sure he would have liked a lighter sentence.

In college I was facing up to 10 years for possession of 4 ounces of pot and failure to affix a marijuana tax stamp.

Yet some people demand we hand out 20 years like it's deciding what to have for lunch.

You miss the point. If they know that will get a certain amount of time with no doubt... they may actually think before committing that crime. If not then they will be off our streets for a set amount of time.

I remember back at the university one of my professors was explaining how drugs came to be illegal.  And when congress was passing their first drug ban which was opium, the guys writing the bill believed that there was a good chance it would be struck down for being unconstitutional.

After it passed it opened the floodgates.

I also believe that every drug that's been made illegal with the exception of extacy and psychodelics has been passed out of racism.

Psychodelics were banned under Nixon after J. Edgar Hoover pointed out that a lot of his 'enemies' who were protesting (Nixon kept an actual list of enemies) liked to drop acid.

Extacy was made popular by marriage counselors in Texas before making its way into clubs.  It was banned for two reasons.
The first is because the recipe was public domain because we got it through the spoils of war.  The 2nd reason is because thanks to congress, it's not ok to take a drug to feel a different way if you already feel fine.  The DEA's scientist that did the study that led to extacy's ban is no longer allowed to publish in any scientific journals because he intentionally used methamphetamine instead of extacy in his extacy study.


Let us not forget that a huge reason drug laws have remained draconian is the simple fact that a lot of companies are making a lot of money from the war on drugs.  A huge part of our bureaucracy is dependent on the war on drugs to justify both its existence, as well as the astronomical amount of money that funds their budget.
Let's throw in the prison industrial complex just to be fair and also point out the insane growth of  for-profit private prisons.

It's easy to look past freedom when we have all these other reasons to lock people in a cage for decades - life.

This is not about pot. That was just brought up by rob.

It is part of the problem though. Folks want lesser time for things they may do that is currently against the law.

The prisons will fill more because we have weakened our society. As a group most want a better life but as individuals we want to cater to ourselves. Business as usual.

This is not about pot. That was just brought up by rob.

well there are a couple different "theories" I am not sure which one is correct....

hemp used to be used for manufacturing all kids of stuff....a textile giant wanted to do away with hemp, so started a campaign to have it criminalized...this seems the most correct to me...

but again I am not exactly sure of the why or how.
